"Mars!" Marissa's sister, Jacklyn, flung the door open. "Get up! Dad's taking us to Blue Springs to see the manatees!" With that, the eight-year-old slammed the door shut and pounded to the other end of their small apartment.

Mars grumbled at her sister's antics and rolled over in her bed.   Oh ew, light.  She squinted and covered her eyes with a hand as she stood up out of bed, muttering something about small children and curtains.   She covered her yawn with a fist as she stretched, something in her back cracking as she made her way over to the window on the other side of the room.  Looking down offered a view of the massive stretch of water in front of the apartment building, and looking up showed a sky that was way to clear for Marissa's taste.   There was an over-abundance of morning sunlight crashing down against the waves of Lake Monroe, which only meant the day was going to get brighter from there.

Marissa preferred the days of summer, when every afternoon around three, clouds would roll around and drop their load, providing shade until sunset.

Mars opened her window, a blast of chilly air rushing into the room.  She leaned over the ledge and looked down at the street and riverwalk to see cold looking joggers and not-quite-awake drivers, their cars still covered in dew from the previous few hours.   Off to the left on a swinging bench sat a teenager playing the ukulele, an occurrence that happened almost every morning.   Mars shook her head at the girl's dedication to her music and turned back into the room she shared with Jacklyn, leaving the window open so she could hear the barely noticeable notes of the stringed instrument.

Mars hummed along as she slipped a bra on under the shirt she wore to bed and pulled up a pair of jeans before grabbing the hoodie that lay on the end of her bed, pulling it over her head as she walked out into the living room, singing the last line of the song under her breath. "'Cause I can't help falling in love with you."

"Marissa!"  Mars' mom, Lydia, appeared from the bathroom.  "Oh good, you're awake.  Get your shoes and socks on, your dad's picking you up."
