Little trumpet girl.

That's what everyone called me.

I was always just the one person that got nicknamed just because someone started it.

I was in band, but little trumpet girl may have been an overstatement.

Then, one day, in the middle of the year, he showed up.

The little drummer boy.

He was supposedly amazing.

I didn't get it until I met him.

He was amazing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I shut my locker and dashed.

I don't have time for this. I'm gonna be late!!!

I reached the door of the band room just literal seconds before the bell.

I was panting, looking at my feet, and used the chair next to me to push myself up.

A tall blonde stood there staring at me.

He must've seen me looking at him, because he looked away almost immediately.

I smiled at him, and sat down at my band seat.

I looked around, and it seemed like everyone was here.

Mr. Mark walked in,"Hey kids! Have you practiced your parts for the concert?"

Muffled responses came from around the room.

"Yeah." "No." "Sorta?" "Ha, practice?"

I sighed.

Sometimes it seems like no one practices.

"Well, you can just flunk your grade then." Mr. Mark shrugged,"Not my problem."

A bunch of grunts, and snorts replied to that.

"Oh, and one more thing." He motioned towards the blonde.

"We have a new member! All the way from Ok'hasis!"

Lots of gasps were heard.

"He's so hot!"

"OMI!"

"I love him already!"

"Ok'hasis? Dayum."

I just continued to look at my music.

"He doesn't seem all that special to me." I mumbled.

"I don't feel like it's my place to introduce him. he deserves the right to tell you his name when he's ready." Mr. Mark smiled,"Now. Let's begin, shall we?"

He nodded at the boy to go back to his seat.

The boy went to the back of the room, by the snare drums.

Percussion, cool.

"And a one, two, ready, go!"

The boy started drumming skillfully immediately.

As I blew into my trumpet, I gasped.

He's... Amazing...

When we finished the song, Mr. Mark stood up, and walked to the boy.

"That was not good."

The once confident quiet blonde suddenly looked as if he had shrunk.

"IT. WAS. AMAZINGLY AMAZING."

The blonde looked relieved.

-- one month later --

It was the night of the concert.

I was terrified.

I just know I didn't practice enough.

Since the blonde still hasn't told anyone his name, he's now referred to as the:

Little drummer boy

He's not even little. He's really tall!

He looked calm as ever.

Mr. Mark walked up to me.

"Hey! There's my little trumpet girl!"

I raised my eyebrows at him,"Need something?"

"Indeed. You know how I've been having you practice that piece?"

"Symphony No. 15 G Major?"

"Uh-huh! Well, I think you should do a solo."

"What?!"

"Yep. With G-, ahem, the little drummer boy."

"B-but-"

"No butts in a band!Only instruments! Now! go do your best out there!" He laughed, and pushed me onto the still-curtained stage.

"Hi." Little drummer boy said.

"Hey. Did Mr. Mark force you into this too?"

He nodded.

"Well, lets get this over with then."

I stuck my hand out to him,"They call me Little trumpet girl. You?"

"Little drummer boy."

We shook hands, and smiled at each other.

Whoa. Stone-Face smiled.

-- after the performance --

I grabbed his hand, we bowed together, and walked towards the entrance to backstage.

The next thing I knew, he was falling.

I saw him close his eyes, and prepare for the impact.

I reacted by yanking his hand that I was holding up, and he got pulled up, too.

"Whew, that was a close one!" I smiled

"Yeah, thanks."

We walked to the snack table backstage.

Okay, I didn't eat that much.

Well, maybe more than a little...

That day made me so happy, like never before.

Confidence and energy arose, and that later defined me.

-- 20 years later --

I cradled the baby in my arms, and hummed "Rock a Bye Baby".

He was so sweet, and had eyes like his father.

"Hey, how's my little tyke?" He smiled.

"Great. How's my big drummer boy?" I laughed.

He kissed me on my head, and laughed along.

"How're you doing, my big trumpet girl?"

We sat together on the couch, and smiled.

What a nice family we have.

I'm so glad I met you, my drummer boy.
