"Sang! Silas! Over here!" I heard Nathan's voice yelling for us. He, Gabe and Luke were taking cover from the strong winds inside a small coffee shop. The next building over was the eight-story apartment building. I looked up and saw that the huge grey, storm clouds, which were the source of the lightning, hovered directly over the apartments. Silas had both my books placed inside the bag with my clothes, and he was carrying it, plus holding onto my shoulders while we ran towards the glass doors held open by Nathan.Quickly, after we got inside the coffee shop, Nathan closed it and ushered us to a corner table where Luke and Gabriel were, busy tapping into their phones.
Looking around, I saw at least ten other people inside, aside from us; most of them were talking animatedly with one another, others were taking videos of what was happening outside.
"What happened to Mr. B?" Silas questioned the three other boys. Then, he pulled up a chair for me to sit on, next to a silent Luke who was gazing outside with a worried look on his face.
"It seems like he's lost control of his alice. We're not sure why. Lightning orbs are all over the fucking place, and it's causing chaos all over the school grounds," Gabe explained, and then he loudly smacked his phone on top of the table. He leaned back on his seat and absentmindedly started caressing the three black studs on his right ear, while sending an angry glare towards his phone.
I heard Nathan and Silas conversing in hushed voices about why they were stuck in this place instead of helping up there. "No clearance from the higher-ups yet," Nathan whispered, subtly glancing at the other people inside before continuing, "A few mentors and doctors are already there checking off students from the Latent and Special Ability Class." Higher-ups? I guess there must be a lot of important people dealing with this situation. Also, I hoped they'd be able to send students who could help them stop this mess.
I couldn't help but think about Mr. Blackbourne. From my previous interactions with him, he looked like the guy who wouldn't go losing his control, much less in broad daylight. The only time I had seen him lose his controlled demeanor was when—
"Silas, Luke, Nathan, Gabe." I looked behind me, expecting Victor, but, to no avail; it was only his voice talking again, cutting off my thoughts. The four mentioned perked up, ceased everything they were doing and sent each other serious looks. "The building manager won't let anyone enter aside from our team, our mentors and a few alice users who could be of help. North is on his way. Kota and Mr. Buble have arranged to be brought over by two travellers directly from Japan. Mr. Duncan has called in a huge favor for this one. In a minute, someone will be down by the entrance doors to let you in. Proceed to the rooftops."
"Sang," Gabriel said as his blue eyes found mine, "we can't let you stay here alone. Victor just talked to us and—"
"I know!" I exclaimed in exasperation, then paused. Wait. Am I not supposed to be able to hear any of this? I glanced in front of me and saw Silas giving me a hard stare. I let myself calm down before I continued. "I heard him. I'll stay here. Go! One of your members need you. Don't mind me. I'll find you when this is all over."
"She heard him?" Gabriel hissed at Silas, then faced me. Before he could ask me questions, Silas sent him a look that seemed to say, 'not now.'
"We will talk about that later, and no, you're not staying here alone. Mr. Duncan just texted me, and he said that we need you there too," Nathan said, a confused look on his face. You and me both, Nathan.
I stood up, and Nathan followed suit. "I-I don't even know my alice. If it's for my safety, you don't have to—"
He reached for my hand and gently gripped it. "Trust Mr. Duncan. Trust us. He's my mentor, and he knows what he's doing. He must've sensed something in you that could help."
