Amal

I twirled and played with the charms of the bracelet on my wrist given to me by shattima on my graduation mindlessly. I always find myself smiling when I recall the events that took place right from my graduation till date... We talked on the phone almost every night despite the time difference while i was away, I know him better now even though i was still a bit shy..

The whole thing is very weird to me. I did not expect to like this person, in fact i was determined to hate him but things are not going as planned. I was falling for him and i was scared. It kind of felt like an Adhd thing.. like it was just my dopamine deprived brain trying to over compensate.

Him and i are nothing alike yet we are drawn to each other. I have only this man once but I feel like i have known him for a very long time.

Anyway, i came back to Nigeria two days ago. I've been going around town greeting relatives, i am so tired.. Mama said she's having none of my complaints. Why do we have to have so many relatives? It was seriously annoying.

I stopped by the gate and honked waiting for the security to let me in, the gates opened and i drove in. I noticed a black evogue parked in my usual parking spot, I parked at another spot and parked not having the strength to ask whoever it was to move their car. Turning off the car engine I entered the house, went straight to the kitchen and asked Lami (the maid) to bring up my lunch.

I passed a console mirror going up, that was when I noticed my appearance since this morning, i was wearing a peach maxi dress with a gray veil and clutch. My face was a bit oily and my lipgloss all dried up, i just shrugged off my messy appearance and made my way up..

I heard a couple of voices in the second parlor upstairs and I decided not to check it out.. Only problem was i had to pass through there to make it to my room.. It was either to man up and go through the lions den or cower into the guest room and die of boredom before they leave.. I went with the first option, said a little prayer and entered the parlor.

Apparently the voices I heard belong to Shattima's mother and sisters.. They noticed me and Mammy (Shattima's mom) immediately smiled.. I said a quick salam to them and greeted them..

"Amal I didn't know you were back" Mammy said

"I came back two days ago" I said timidly, i never had to feel this shy and self conscious around them but now i do.

All of a sudden the possibility of them becoming my in-laws dawned on me. They are good people and i love them but the whole idea was weird to me.

"Congratulations.. I'm sorry we couldn't make it, we have been so busy with wedding preparations" she said softly

Wedding? What? Who's? I almost choked on my own spit, I'm glad I remained calm "it's alright Mammy, you didn't miss much.. Who's getting married?"

"Didn't miss much? Amal you are so humble.. You are the overall best in a whole department, you graduated with a first class in chemical engineering yet you downplay it." She turned to my mom "Hajiya Aisha you have raised a truly remarkable young lady MashaAllah (Allah has willed it), we will be lucky to have you as our daughter too" I blushed furiously lowering my head. She laughed at my behavior.

I was too embarrassed to stay any longer that I dragged Zarah and Ammah to my room. They both are Shattima's younger sisters but Zarah is my mate and older than Amma by two years, but we all get along very well. They are those kind of crazy fun people that you just love being around.
