Chapter 2

“So if A is less than B and C is greater than or less than than zero, is it true or false that A times C is always less than B times C.” Mr. Crain, my math teacher wrote on the board.

“Hmm, lets see… Skye. Is this question true or false?”

She looked up from the notes she was taking next me and stated nervously,

“True?”

“Actually,” I cut in, “If C is a positive number, when it is multiplied by a positive number this will always be true. But, if it happens to be multiplied by a negative number, it will be the opposite and B times C will be less than A times C. When ever an inequality is multiplied by a negative number the sign changes direction. Hence the answer is not always true and is not always false." Looking around at all the other people in my class, they were either half asleep, or writing down everything I just said.

It was the third week of school, and my advanced math class had started off on the easiest subjects. I wasn’t complaining because the homework was really easy to complete. But, if I wanted to learn anything, I really should switch myself into a harder class.

“That is correct Mackenzie."

 *RING*

"Everyone, before you leave, there will be a quiz on inequalities on Monday. Don't forget to study, okay?" The class groaned in response, sauntering out of the room.

I packed up all of my supplies and was about to walk over to Adam, who was waiting for me by the door, when Mr. Crain walked over to me.

“Hello Mackenzie.” I looked up at him as he talked, “I really do think you should move yourself to the next class up. I know you might not have been considering it because it is a college level class, at NYU. This school has a special program with them, you should really look into it.” He said slowly.

“Actually, I have been considering switching my classes. I think I might. Thanks for the suggestion Mr. Crain, have a great weekend!” I said walking out of his classroom dancing with joy that it was finally the weekend.

“Hey Kenz.” Adam said when I walked out of the classroom. He didn’t ask what Mr. Crain held me back for, he was never one to be nosy, or really care about anyone's business. “So I was wondering… i-if you… wanted to go t-to a party with me to-tonight?” He asked me. The nervousness was clear in his voice as he stuttered over his words. Was he asking me out, a cute boy actually asking me out?

“Are you asking me out, Adam?” I said cheekily.

He dipped his head down and kissed right below my ear, brushing his lips over my ear lobe as he whispered, “Yes, Mackenzie, yes I am.”

I shuddered as he once again kissed just below my ear and turned to open his locker. What do I stay? I mean, what if it doesn't work out, our friendship will be ruined. But he's so beautiful.

“Okay. Why not?”

“Great, I’ll pick you up at nine. Oh, and dress nicely, were going to a party with a lot of boys.” He replied smiling, shutting his locker and shooting me a wink, walking out of the school towards his car.

I stood in front of my full body mirror with Skye sitting on my bed.

“Its cute Kenz, but I don’t understand why you’re stressing over this. It's just a stupid party.”

“Its not just any party, Adam texted me saying there would be college guys there. Do you know what that means? That means cute older boys-”

“That you will probably never see again.” She cut me off matter-of-factly.

“True. Whatever. I’m just going to wear this one.” It couldn't hurt to have a little fun instead of stressing over school for once. I checked with Adam already to make sure we would be home early enough for my dad not to know I was even gone. He had assured me multiple times when he told me he had everything under control and to stop worrying.

I ran to the bathroom to apply a little bit of make-up Skye brought me, since I didn't have any of my own. I never really thought I needed it, but I just felt like it today.

After poking myself in the eye with the eyeliner for like the third time, I made Skye do it.

“Skye, go answer the door, its probably Adam. I’ll be right there.” I said finishing up the last touches of the make up I actually knew how to apply.

I walked out of the bathroom running to slip on a pair of combat boots, looking in the mirror one last time. The pants I had on were tightest jean shorts I own. They came about mid-thigh and were tight enough to extenuate my curves in all the right places. I had never been pretty, but I did have an okay body. The white top I was wearing was one of my favorites, it was flow with lace fowers, and it looked good. I had to admit, the light make-up I was wearing really brought out my eyes. I thought I looked, well, hot. I never got male attention, but I might as well try.

“Hey Kenzie. Wow, you look amazing.” Adam said when I finally walked up the steps.

"Thanks, you don't look to bad yourself.” I replied looking into his eyes. He really did look really good though, only wearing jeans and a white t-shirt. How is it even possible to look that good.

I was snapped out of my thoughts when Skye cleared her throat, trying to get me to leave.

"Don't stay out too late kids, I'll be here when you guys get back." Skye yelled at us as we drove away, making us both chuckle.

~

When we arrived at the party, red cups were littered all over the lawn, indicating what type of party this was going to be. I had never really been to a party like this, so I didn’t know what to expect.

As we walked in, a saw hundreds of people crowed into a tiny house.

“Hey man.” Someone called to Adam making him stop mid step and turn around.

“Hey! Nate, how've you been. Long time no see.” He said giving him a pat on the back.

“Kenzie, this is my mate, Nathan. Nathan this is Kenzie.” He said ushering to each of us. They had their own little conversation, when I felt my phone buzz in my pocket. Checking it, I saw I had a text from Skye saying, 'Give hot guys my number.' I chuckled, sliping my phone back into my pocket.

“I’m going to go get us some drinks, want anything Kenzie?”

"No, thank you." I said, remembering what my dad said about drinking. I never really broke the rules, but that's why parents love me I guess.

“Hey babe, wanna dance?” A husky British accent whispered in my ear from behind, gently biting down on my earlobe.

I turned around only to be met with a beautiful pair of green eyes.

“No thanks. Sorry.” I said, lost in his eyes.

“It wasn’t really a question, babe.” He said pulling me toward the dance floor.
