"No," said Chrissy firmly.
Tommy frowned in disappointment.
Chrissy crossed her furry blue and green arms as she went on. "I'm sorry, Tommy, you're a super nice guy and all, but I hope you'll understand that I have my reasons."
"Can I ask what reasons?" Tommy asked sadly.
Chrissy sighed. "Well, I don't know if I'd be able to handle a relationship right now. Like I'm not ready for the problems that I could cause with it. You see what I'm saying?" she explained.
Tommy was hurt. "Yeah, I guess, but please, Chrissy, you never know until you try," he said, talking rapidly. "I've been thinking about you a lot lately, and the more I do, the more I realize how much I like you, Chrissy!"
Chrissy felt her ears turn hot. "I've got to say no," she said finally. "I'm just not ready. I'm really sorry, Tommy."
Tommy looked her in the eye. She's serious, he concluded.
Defeated, Tommy hung his head and dragged his long spiked tail as he made his way toward the door of Chrissy's treehouse.
"I really am sorry," Chrissy repeated as she opened the door for him.
Without answering, Tommy walked out the door. Chrissy watched as he opened his purple wings and flew away instead of taking the spiral staircase around Chrissy's tree.
As she watched him soaring away on that sunny day, she couldn't help but feel like she'd done the wrong thing, but then she remembered the vow that she'd made to herself: She would never start a relationship until she was sure that she could find someone who wouldn't cause her to turn away from God in any way. She felt like He was on her side and she didn't want to risk losing that.
With that, she closed her door and continued doing her homework.
