Dan was pissed off, very pissed off and he seemed to be showing that through his attitude at school very well.
He picked fights with anything that moves and yelled at the teacher. He had already earned two detentions that day and was looking to get a third one.
"Mr. Howell," Mrs. English asked, "What hemisphere is the continent of Africa located on?"
"As the geography teacher, shouldn't you know? I don't know, but I think that is part of your job." Dan snapped, "I don't think asking a teenager who doesn't care one bit will help your situation at all."
"Mr. Howell, do not use that attitude with me. Detention." Mrs. English snapped back at Dan.
"Fine." The tall boy said getting up and pulling his backpack over his shoulder, "I think I'll go then."I have no business being here." All of the students eyes laid on Dan, but he didn't care, like always. Dan never cared about anything that involved school, and everyone knew that. Dan walked out of the classroom, ignoring the protests from his teacher.
Dan walked down the hall, tears choking him. Last year on this day his younger brother and soulmate had died in a fire and it was all his fault. It was as if his teachers had expected him to function properly on a day like this. Dan remembered leaving the bedroom for a ten minutes before coming back to discover the door had been jammed and smoke coming from he room he and his brother, Thomas had shared. He tried to break down the door, but it wouldn't budge. He heard the smoke alarm go off and started panicking more. Dan had called out to his brother, but of course Thomas couldn't hear him, especially since he was born deaf. The only thing that brought him comfort was the fact that he could hear his brother coughing out smoke from the air behind that door. After a few minutes the coughing stopped and screams of pain had begun. Dan knocked against the door harder than he even thought possible only to be pushed back by firefighters. Some paramedics had wrestled him into a stretcher and drove him to a hospital. Dan remembered looking at his wrist to see the black writing fade to a grey, which meant death. He tried to push the whole incident from his mind countless times, because it would only bring him more pain. It didn't work. The memory of the fire only seemed to imprint itself deeper into his memory, like the marks on his wrist.
Thinking of his wrist Dan looked down at it, to see the familiar black writing that everyone had on their left wrist. He looked at the five lines. Four of them had faded digging deeper into his wrist, than the one remains black one. He reread the lines, even though they were memorized by the time Dan reached the age of eight. His first line 'Bear." Had belonged to his younger brother, which was know faded. 'Bear' was Thomas's nickname for Dan when he was younger, still had hearing, and couldn't pronounce his name, somehow. The second one, 'Can I borrow your pink marker?' belonged to his first friend Louise Pentland. Louise has been Dan's first real friend outside of his family, since they met in preschool. She had died from cancer when they were both eight. The third and fourth one, "How come you don't talk much?" Came from two older boys, Chris and PJ. Both had asked Dan that after Louise died, since he refused to speak for weeks. They were inseparable twins that had died in a car crash when Dan was only ten. The last one on his wrist 'I love you, Dan." Had not yet been spoken by anyone as there was no one had said that as their first words to him. It seemed impossible that anyone would, since they would have to know Dan well enough to say that, but the only way to know somebody was to talk to them.
As he was about to exit the building he felt a tap on his shoulder.
"What the fuck do you want?" Dan shouted furiously at the person as he turned around to face him. A slightly shorter boy stood behind him, with a black fringe. The boy looked frightened by Dan's angry outbreak and crying appearance, then he started to do something, that Dan had not seen for exactly a year.
The boy started moving his right hand towards me with his thumb up and middle and pointer finger extended, he made a thumbs up symbol and circled it in the air. 'Are You Okay?' He had asked me in sign language.
I was, so shocked I couldn't speak, but that wasn't exactly necessary at the moment. I moved my hand up to my chest and then pointed my thumb to my heart. 'I'm Fine.' Dan wiped away some tears, with the back of his hand. "I will be fine. I will be fine." Dan repeated in his mind to calm himself. He took a deep breath to calm down and properly communicate to the boy.
'Are you sure?' He signed to the taller boy.
'Yes.' Dan signed back to him.
'You know sign language?' The black haired boy signed to him, his eyes lighting up.
'Of course," Dan signed back using the customary hand gestures, he had so often used with his brother.
'How?' Phil signed to him, getting more and more excited with each passing second.
'My brother.' Dan signed back, 'He was deaf.'
'That's cool that you learned.' The boy signed, 'My name is Phil. What is yours?'
'Dan,' The brown haired boy signed, 'Are you new?'
'Yes. Could you show me to the bathroom?' He signed.
'Of course.' Dan signed. Dan walked him to the end of the hallway to the boys bathroom.
'Can I have your texting number?' Phil signed, at the entrance of the restroom.
'Yes,' Dan signed, handing Phil his phone, 'put you're number in and I'll text you.'
Phil grabbed Dan's phone and typed in his number before heading to the bathroom. Dan waited outside the bathroom, as he texted Phil.
Dan: Hey Phil! It's Dan.
Dan decided to wait outside the bathroom to invite Phil over to his house. It was five minutes till school ended anyways and Dan could use the distraction.
Phil walked out of he bathroom, surprised to see Dan there.
'You want to hang out at my place?' Dan asked him in sign language.
'Sure' Phil signed back.
//authors note: I apologize if I did not write this properly. I have never met someone deaf, so my knowledge is quite limited. I also apologize for the crappy piece of writing this is. Thanks for reading it anyways!!!
