"Vanessa, have you finished thinking about where you want to go?" My dad sat me down and asked me. There was no doubt in my mind about where I was going to. I was going to Delta State University. Why? You ask, why travel to the Niger Delta where rumours of war and petrol crisis are rampant? Well, I have just one reason. It's far enough from home. It might seem really stupid to you but growing up, I was never allowed to go out or explore, always bring under the constant supervision of my overbearing parents. If course I will jump at an opportunity of freedom.
"Yes" I responded gruffly. You see, I sorta kinda have a strained relationship with my dad. Strained in the sense that whenever we are together, there is this awkward tension that is always there. Sort of how you feel when you meet someone for the first time. There is no tension between my mom and I though, she's the best. That's just how it is in my house. The boys like the dad and the girls like the mom. Simple.
"So" he cleared his throat, "Between Abuja university, University of Ilorin, Delta State University and University of Lagos, where would you want to go?"
"I'll go to Delsu" I said
"That's good. At least now I won't have to worry too much about money" dad said with a relieved sigh. Don't get me wrong here, we're not poor. We have a lot of money but we aren't big spenders. Also, there is a term used when placing students, Catchment. If you are from the catchment area of the school, there are some benefits. For example, if your scores are good enough during the entrance examinations, you will be surely given admission instead of being filtered out like the rest and your school fees won't be as high. Maybe a difference of ten thousand naira or more.
"Well then, I'll call Nancy and ask for the post-UTME date" Nancy is my sister. She gained admission two years before.
I bet you're wondering what post-UTME is. It is the entrance examination. The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination is a compulsory exam that students around the nation are supposed to take before their post-UTME.
I also bet you don't understand where I'm going with all this but before you can understand, I have to start from the beginning, a few months back.Hey loves! Welcome to the beginning of my first book about home, here in the heart of Africa! I decided to step back into my comfort zone cuz I've been out of it for a while with my other books. At least now I don't have to mix up addresses or names or places. I'm basing this one on what I know like the back of my palm. Hope you enjoy.
Hugs and Kisses from me to you!P.S.
To the trolls out there forcing writers to do certain things by stealing their works, I say well done o! You'll get what's coming. Thank God for copyright.
