BEST FRIEND PROTOCOL

III

“God, is it possible that he gets more gorgeous every year?” Claire asked me, obviously drooling at the hot, leather-jacket-wearing guy who is entering the house.

I didn’t answer her question since I watched the very same guy walk up to my best friend and share a friendly man hug with him. HOLY MOTHER OF—since when were they close? They never even shared a nod or even a smile in junior year. Seriously? Being gone the whole summer makes you feel like an alien when it comes to your social life.

“Since when were they close?” I asked Claire.

She shrugged. “I have no idea. Honestly? I haven’t even heard from Seth half of the summer. The other half was because he was asking for my help with this party”

I was about to ask her another question when Anna cooperated in the conversation. “Wait. You know that guy?”

Let’s just say that Claire has a mere fascination with Toby Aspen. It isn’t a crush but she adores the guy. “THAT GUY? That’s Toby Aspen!”

Anna laughed a little as if Claire said something funny—which she didn’t do. “I’m sorry. Is that supposed to mean something to me?”

I snickered at the disbelieving look that Claire was sporting. “If you want to survive in the academy…then yeah”

Anna’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion. “What do you mean?”

I placed a hand on her shoulder and started pointing at groups around the wide room of the Adams’ guest house. “Look at the academy as your typical high school. Those—“ I gestured at the jersey-wearing jerks chugging beers “—are your typical football jocks. They pretend to rule the academy with their small brains and whores…which brings us to them—“ I now pointed at the clearly drunk girls dancing—or maybe grinding—with a couple of said jocks on the dance floor “—they only got inside the school because of their daddy’s money. Then you have the scholarship students—very nice people. Then the outcasts, also called the rebels—they like to keep with themselves. Meet your student body president—“ I nodded my head towards Claire. She curtsied in return—believe me when I say that she likes to be dramatic. “—now for the best guys that you will ever meet in your entire life: Seth, Paul and Maxon—“ I pointed at each of my guy friends. “—they are the ‘on-the-road-to-stardom guys. They are practically praised since they are the future owners of their family’s corporations. Basically that just means that they’re rich, hot and annoyingly charming. They take advantage of that too—except for Paul” I dropped my hand and smiled at Anna.

Seth must have noticed that I was pointing at him since he looked at us and gave a wink—no doubt to impress Anna.

“That’s Seth Adams, right? The one who’s throwing this party?”

“That would be correct. He’s also my playboy of a best friend. Be warned” I gave her a small wink.

I felt Claire tap my shoulder. I raised my eyebrows at her expecting stance. “You’re forgetting something—or rather, someone”

“Oh right! The school’s notorious bad boy—Toby Aspen. Let’s just say that he can’t be kicked out of school because of his straight As and he’s kind of the most wanted guy in school—aside from the three guys I told you about. He’s not a player or a manwhore—he just likes to keep to himself”
