A new day in school. Boring, dull... None of the kids would even talk to Sherlock anymore. He decided to stay alone. Work by himself. Play by himself during breaks. But today they would have a new student in class. The teacher didn't say more. No gender, no name, nothing. Everyone was rather excited to meet the new member of the group. Everyone except Sherlock. "Great, another human with tiny boring brains torturing me every day" he thought. There was a knock on the door, slowly opening and the teacher walked in first. "Boys and girls, our new student is ready to come in. Be nice okay?" She said and sat down. A small boy with sandy blonde hair and a beige jumper walked in. A hedgehog backpack in hand. "Where can I sit down madam?" The boy asked. The teacher smiled and looked around. "Well, I'm just going to try it, he seems nice, he wouldn't bully Sherlock" she thought. "Why don't you sit next to the dark curly haired boy? His name is Sherlock" Ms Hudson said. John smiled and nodded, walking towards the seat with a smile. "Well, boys and girls today we are going to introduce ourselves to John first. And then we start with some math!" The teacher said cheerful. The introducing started at the other end of the classroom, working it's way to Sherlock, as last. "I'm Sherlock Holmes. I love bees... And I hate this..." He said quietly and sat back down. "He's a freak!" a girl yelled. "Yes! A weirdo! Don't play with him!" a boy added. John shook his head and whispered to Sherlock. "Don't mind them... I don't listen to them. You look nice. And you have cool hair!" John said and smiled. Sherlock looked up in surprise and smiled too, softly nodding. Now it was John's turn. "I'm John. I love cats and jumpers. I love to play football, and I love to read books" he said and sat back down. "I love to read books too..." Sherlock said softly, trying to open up a bit to the new kid. Maybe this one was diffrent. The class began and everything went well. John chuckled a few times when Sherlock made a comment about others. And then it was lunchbreak.
Sherlock stood up and walked to the cafeteria, sitting alone in a corner. John followed and sat with him. "Can I sit here?" John asked before sitting down. Sherlock looked up and watched John before answering. "You want to sit with me?" John nodded. "Ofcourse Sherlock. You are nice... Why wouldn't I?" John asked and sat down. "Nobody wants to sit with me... I always sit alone" Sherlock answered and looked down. He needed to get used to having someone that talks to him. John smiles softly. "I know what you mean. In my previous school I was alone too. But hey, we can be friends" John said. Sherlock froze at that. John noticed. "Sherlock, everything okay? I am not mocking you... I mean it" he assured him. "I don't have... Friends. You... You are the first" Sherlock said shyly and looked down. John chuckled and smiled, handing Sherlock his biscuit. "Here, you can have it" John said. Sherlock looked up and smiled wholeheartly for the first time since Redbeard. "Thank you John..." He said and took the biscuit. The two boys talked and smiled and they even ran around the playground. In the afternoon they sat in class again. Sherlock helped John with history. John helped Sherlock with creative writing. They make a good team, the teacher thought. At the end of the day the teacher called John aside. Sherlock waited outside for him. "Well John, how was your first day here?" Mrs Hudson asked sweetly. John was really excited. "It was awesome miss Hudson! I had lots of fun and I got a friend! Sherlock is a really nice guy! He is funny and I like his hair!" John said with a big smile. Mrs Hudson was happy. "I'm really glad you and Sherlock get along so well. And I am sure Sherlock is happier than he shows" she said. John smiled wide at that. "I'm glad too miss. I really am. I never really had friends either. And he helped me with history today! Sherlock is very smart" John said, still smiling. "I know he is. Sadly you are the only one of the group who thinks he is smart. The rest finds him annoying" Mrs Hudson replied. John frowned and shook his head. "Then they don't know him well. Sherlock is not annoying" John protested. Mrs Hudson smiled and nodded. "Now, off you go! He's waiting for you" she said. "Really? I'll see you tomorrow miss H!" John said and ran out of the classroom.
"Hey..." Sherlock said shyly. John smiled wide. "Hello! Why aren't you out of school yet?" John asked. "I... I wanted to thank you again. For today? I really hope you'll still be my friend tomorrow John" Sherlock said, looking down at his feet. John chuckled and felt like Sherlock needed a hug so he hugged him. "Ofcourse Sherlock! Ofcourse! We will stay friends!" John answered. Sherlock smiled and hugged back. It was the first time he recieved a hug and didn't mind it, last time was again, Redbeard. "How do you go home?" Sherlock asked. "I go by foot. I only live a few blocks away. And you?" John asked back, now looking up at Sherlock. "Me too, and wich way?" John pointed at a street and Sherlock smiled. "We live in the same neighbourhood then. I need to go there too" he said. And so they walked. And they found out they only lived one street apart from eachother. "That is so cool!" John said excited. "Maybe we can meet up here at the corner tomorrow morning?" Sherlock asked. "That's a great idea!" John agreed. "I'll see you tomorrow then?" Sherlock asked. John nodded "ofcourse! I'll be here!"
Both boys went home and talked about their day. The next few weeks went on like that, John and Sherlock became closer to eachother. They went to eachother's house to make homework or play with the dog. They became really good friends. But one rainy sunday morning Sherlock's mother called Sherlock downstairs for dinner, and a good talk. "Sherlock boy, daddy and I need to tell you something. Something very important" she said. "Oh... What is it?" He said, not really paying attention to what his mother was saying. "We are moving" his mother said. Sherlock spit out his water and looked at his mother in disbelief. "What? Mummy we can not leave here!" Sherlock protested. "It's already been decided Sherlock dear, it's for daddy's job. We are going to Scotland. So you'll have to go to a new school too. I'm sorry but we can't go back" she said, serving up for her son. "I don't want to go mummy... Here I have John... I finally have a friend... And you take him away from me..." Sherlock said sadly. Mrs Holmes sat down the plate and took place beside Sherlock and hugged him. "I'm so sorry..." She said. "I'm not hungry... Sorry..." Sherlock said and ran back to his room, crying in his pillow. He didn't leave his room until next day, to leave for school. "When will we leave?" He asked his mother. "This weekend..." She answered, feeling really sorry about this. "Will we come visit him?... Please?" He asked and looked at his mother, with teary eyes. His mother nodded. "Ofcourse we will boy... Ofcourse. And he can sleep over. And you can stay with him if that's alright for his parents..." She assured him. Sherlock just nodded and hugged her, before going to the corner off the street. John was already there. "Hello! How was your weekend Sherlock?" John asked with enthousiasm. Sherlock hung his head low and just started walking to school. "Hey... What's wrong?" John asked, now sad too. Because he knew something was wrong with his friend. "I... I'm leaving... Mum and dad are moving... For daddy's work. To Scotland" Sherlock said, trying his best not to cry again. John was silent for a moment. Taking in the news. He was now even more sad. "Sherlock you can't leave! I want you to stay... I can't lose my best friend" John said, softly. Hoping it was a joke. "I'm your only friend" Sherlock added. "Don't do that Sherlock. Even if I had billions of friends... you would always be my best friend" John assured him. "I don't want to leave... But mum said there is no way out. But she says we can come and visit you. And do sleepovers..." Sherlock went on. "Please... That would be nice" John said. They entered the school gate by now. "When do you leave?" John asked. "This weekend, mum said" Sherlock answered, now looking at John. John nodded, then smile. "Hey! Be happy... We will still be friends! We can write letters! Or skype! If mum allows it. And your parents too. And we will see eachother! And we have still a week... Shall we make it a good one?" John asked, holding out a hand for Sherlock. Sherlock softly smiled and nodded. John was right. They would still be friends. Sherlock shook John's hand and said: "Oh yes! Let's do that. And maybe we could do sleepovers this week too?". John nodded happily, liking that idea. During the playtimes they talked a lot and played hide and seek. They walked home together and said that after dinner John would go to Sherlock. Once John was home he bursted out in tears. He didn't want Sherlock to leave. John's mother walked towards him and kneeled down infront of him. "Hey hey hey, what is wrong boy? Did something happen at school?" She said, trying to comfort him. "Sherlock is leaving mama. He is going to Scotland" John said sobbing and sniffing. His mother caressed his head and picked him up. "Hey hey hey, you'll see eachother again John. No worries. We'll go visit there... Okay?" she said. John nodded and just hugged his mother close. "Can I go to him after dinner? I said I would..." He asked between sniffs. His mom smiled and nodded, kissing his head. "Ofcourse dear, and ask his mum or dad if he can come over for dinner tomorrow, if he likes he can come right after school and can stay the night too" she said. John smiled now and hugged her tighter. "Thank you mama, I love you... You are the best!" He said happily. "I love you too my boy. And hey, I need to tell you something too. You know that daddy and I got divorced right? I lied to you about something. It was stupid of me... But I want to make it up to you..." His mum said. "You did? What's wrong?" John asked, not knowing what could be wrong. "I told you daddy doesn't want to see you and that he isn't a good daddy right? Well... Daddy is actually a good dad. I was just so angry... And I made sure he didn't have the right to see you. But he really does want to see you and play with you. And I know you love him... I am sorry... I really am" she said, looking down. "Mama... Why did you do that? But I'm happy you tell me now... I forgive you..." He said softly, sitting on her knee now. "I was angry at daddy because he left. And I'm sorry. But, I will make sure you see him more often okay? And guess where daddy lives now?" She said softly, now looking back at her son. ".... Scotland?" John guessed with hope. His mum nodded. John smiled wide and hugged his mum. They had dinner and after that John went to Sherlock, taking his dog with him. They went for a walk and played in the garden. The next day Sherlock went to John's house in the evening and stayed over.
The end of the week was quickly there. When it was time to leave, John stood at Sherlock's house to wave. They hugged tightly before Sherlock sat in the car. Both boys were crying softly. The car slowly drove away and Sherlock waved out of the back window. John ran after the car for a bit while waving and eventually stopped. Still waving until he couldn't see the car anymore. He put his hands in his pockets and walked home, head hanging low. Sherlock held a little hedgehog in his arms. It was a gift from John. Sherlock hoped Mrs Watson would give John his gift as soon as he got home. And she did. "John? I have something for you. Sherlock wanted me to gove it to you" she said, holding a wrapped package. John smiled softly and took it. "Thank you mama" he said and sat down, slowly opening the gift. It was a pluch bee. John smiled and hugged it close. His mum smiled. Weeks passed by. And then a letter from Sherlock arrived. John eagerly read it and send one back. It went on for a few months. But then something changed. John went to his dad now, every once in a while. And his mother too. And slowly on, they fell in love again. After a few days, John was called downstairs for a family meeting. "Boy, your mother and I need to tell you something. As you know, mummy and daddy aren't fighting anymore. We had a long and good talk. And... We are moving back in with eachother. But we need your help" his father said. John smiled and nodded, saying he was listening. "You have to choose if we stay here, or if we go back to London. If we stay here you'll have to go to a new school again, and we don't know if you would like that" his mum said now. John's face lighted up and smiled wide. "I want to stay here! Can I go to the same school as Sherlock mama? Pleaasee! And not telling him! So he will find out on the first day of school?" He said excited. "Sherlock? Do you mean Sherlock Holmes?" His dad asked. John and his mother both nodded at the same time. "I work with his dad, he is a genius. I met Sherlock once. He was a little shy. I didn't know you guys were friends" his dad said. John smiled wide. "Best friends papa! I was really sad because he had to leave" John said. The family talked about some stuff that needed to be done for the moving. The next day John surprise visited Sherlock. He brought biscuits that his mum had made. It was really fun and both boys were happy to see eachother again. They talked and talked and they went for a walk with John's dog. John told Sherlock about their dads working together and Sherlock told John about his new school. Sherlock didn't have friends there yet. "I'm sure you'll have some next year!" John said, trying to cheer Sherlock up. "I doubt that John. They are all idiots..." Sherlock said and looked up. "Oh... Well... I'm sorry..." John said, trying his best to keep it a secret. The boys saw eachother at least once a week. And the first schoolday approached quickly. John was so excited. He went to school with his hedgehog backpack and hid in the toilets, knowing where he had to go. Sherlock waited infront of class and John slowly and silently sneaked up to him, just standing behind Sherlock. Not saying anything. Just waiting until Sherlock noticed. Sherlock was looking at the ground. "Go away... I don't have lunchmoney" Sherlock said, thinking it was a bully. "Well, I hoped you would at least notice it was a new kid" John said and chuckled. "John! What are you doing here!" Sherlock said and looked up, smiling so wide, and so confused. "Going to school you dummy. I told you I was sure you would have a friend here didn't I?" John said and winked. Sherlock chuckled and hugged John tightly. "How??" Sherlock asked. "My parents got back together. They gave me the choice between going back to London, or stay with papa here in Scotland. It didn't take long to decide. Mama and I left London and came to Scotland! I wanted to surprise you by not telling it earlier" John said, really happy. "You sure did!" Sherlock answered and smiled widely. They had a fun first day in school. All the other kids where confused by seeing John and Sherlock being friends and playing and having fun. That evening John went home and his mum was away for work. "Hey there my boy, how was school?" John's dad asked. "It was amazing papa! Sherlock was really happy! And so was I. But I want to ask you something..." John said and sat down on his dad's lap. "Oh really? Well, go ahead. I'm all ear" his dad answered. "I know I am still young... And I think you won't take me serious... But... When do you know you love someone? Like really love? Like you and mama?" John asked and looked at his dad. "Well... Boy, you are young. But it's not impossible, you know. You know when you love someone when... You think about them a lot. Almost all the time. Everything you do, everything you see, you'll always try to link it to them. You love being around them. You love talking with them, and about them. There is nothing you would change about them. Everything is perfect. They are the most beautiful person you've ever known. Your heart does this skippy things when they are around. They give you butterflies in your tummy. You think you can handle the world, if they are around. You can't take your eyes off of them. When you have a bad day, they know exactly how to turn your day into a better one. You would do anything for them. And I could talk for hours... But I guess you know what I mean now, right?" John's dad said, looking at his son. John softly blushed and nodded, looking down. "I do papa... I do" he said. "And I can tell that you are, I even have a funny feeling who the kid is" his father said. John looked up, wondering if he was serious. Also he was a little afraid. What if his dad didn't aprove? He knew what happened to grown ups. "It's Sherlock, isn't it?" Mr Watson said, with a soft smile. John nodded and looked down. "Are you mad now papa? Will you throw me out like the Millers did with their daughter?" He asked. Mr Watson hugged his son tightly, caressing his head. "Ofcourse not Johnny, ofcourse not. To be honest, I'm not all that surprised. I know how well you two get along. And I am not mad! I never would. You are my son. And I love you for who you are. You are much too young to worry about all that stuff you know that? I am proud of you. That you are acting so grown up. You are an amazing boy" his dad said. John hugged his father tight. The two of them talked on and on, about silly stuff mostly. Mr Watson gave John some advice of what he could do. John decided to tell Sherlock, but only if he knew they would still be best friends. John went to school the next day, and he was nervous. "Hey Sherlock!" He said happily when his friend was waiting at the gate. "You are late" Sherlock joked and smiled. John chuckled. "Oh am I? I'm sorry. How are you?" John answered. "I was joking John. And I am very well! But there is something with you. What's wrong? You seem so... Worried?" Sherlock asked and frowned softly. "Yeah... Just a little. I don't know, it's silly" John said. Sherlock shook his head and answered: "it's not if it's bothering you. What's up? Can I help?". John hesitated, trying to find what he should say. "What do you think of being in love? When are you sure?" John asked. "Mum always said you can start knowing for sure around 16 years old. But I don't see why not earlier. But I promised mummy to wait until I know for sure. Why are you worrying about that?" Sherlock asked slightly confused. "Nah, nevermind. It was just because of my mama and papa" John answered and smiled, deciding not to tell Sherlock. They went to school and it was fun. And so it went on for years. John and Sherlock stayed best friends. Other kids started to talk to them too, some were even jealous of their friendship. Sherlock's parents took John along on their holiday, and John's parents took Sherlock along on theirs. The boys never liked going on holidays, but now they did. As the boys grew older, the girls started to show interest in John. John didn't really want it, and Sherlock didn't like it. But he understood. John was great.
It was now John's 15th birthday, he was having a birthday party he said. But only Sherlock was there. "Where are the others?" Sherlock asked. "Everyone is here, I only asked really good friends. Greg couldn't come. Molly was out of town. And I didn't ask Irene" John said. "How about all those girls?" Sherlock asked. "God no! Sherlock, you know I don't like all their attention... But enough of that. You look great! Purple really suits you" John said and smiled wide. He really liked it when Sherlock wore his purple shirt. Sherlock softly blushes. "Thank you... Here you go, happy birthday John" Sherlock said and held up what looked like a cage. "Aaaw thank you Sherlock, you shouldn't have" John said and took it, opening the gift. "And don't worry, I got it legally" Sherlock chuckled and watched eagerly and waited for John's reaction. John stood there, looking at the small hedgehog with wide eyes. Not believeing it. He looked up at Sherlock with a big smile. "I know you love hedgehogs... So yeah... I brought everything you need too, I gave it to your mother. It's a girl and she is completely healthy" Sherlock said with a smile. John hugged Sherlock tightly. "Thank you so much Sherlock... That's the best gift ever! You are the best" John said and looked at his friend. "Happy birthday" he said and ruffled John's hair. John kept looking at Sherlock and Sherlock at John. "Remember my second day in school... Here in Scotland? When I asked about love?" John said softly, not taking his eyes away. Sherlock could only nod, nervous, hoping John would tell exactly what he thought he would say. "I asked because... I knew, from then on that I was in love with someone special. With.... You" John finally admitted and it felt great. He blushed and waited. Sherlock was frozen, he couldn't say anything. John looked down, thinking he made a huge mistake. "I'm sorry" he said. Sherlock saw and lifted John's head, looking at him for another moment before leaning in and softly kissing John's lips. John closed his eyes and kissed back, wrapping his arms around Sherlock and stepping a little closer. They knew it was for both their first kiss. And they both thought it was amazing. "Sherlock..." John said when they parted, foreheads resting against eachother. "I love you too you idiot" Sherlock said, softly caressing John's cheek with his thumb. John smiled wide, so so happy. They both were. "This is... By far, the best birthday ever" John said and kissed Sherlock again. After some talking John named his hedgehog Sherly.
That was the beginning of a beautiful relationship.
