It's 2:17, I should probably consider clocking in now before it's too late, but the taste of caffeine and nicotine in my mouth make so much greatness of this moment, that I want nothing more than to stay here. Day's as bright as ever and the wind whistles as it blows, I feel at peace right here and now and I don't want to go in there. I look down at my phone and see that the time has changed drastically, it's 2:31 now and I'm late. Wait a minute, do I go in at 2:30 or 3...I've got a strange feeling; something tells me I'm not supposed to be here today. I rush inside and ask the guys what day it is and they look at me in suspicion, they probably think that I'm high. "Boss is looking for you man, urgently". That was Frank. He's a kid in his 20s, young but very bright, he's technically the one who keeps this ship afloat so I give all the respect the man deserves. He's head of team delta, who's main focus is maintenance and security. Everything we share here must not escape to any external sources, and these are the guys to make sure of that.
Humanity has achieved great historical success in becoming the first specie to have developed the ability to manipulate time, and I work for the company that holds the key, but I'm afraid it may not be for long. "what does he need?" I ask, and as I ask he laughs, "are you even aware of how many days you've missed mate?" now that can't be possible, today is Saturday. I am not supposed to be here. What the hell is going on. There could only be one reasonable explanation to all of this madness, I unlock a computer and look at the time, it's 7:47AM, I'm either tripping or dreaming...and as I realize that I'm dreaming I awake, very desperately wanting to know the time but my phone is dead. I place it underneath the charging lamp and waited until it powers back on. I rest my head and close my eyes for just a bit, then wake back up almost instantly—or so it seemed anyway—I look back to my phone and look at the time, it's Saturday August 30th, 2042. 8:04AM.
Ahh ok right, sorry, allow me to explain, depending on what year you're reading this, these may come to you as a surprise, but humanity's course took a huge turn in the 2020's. Technology was advancing very drastically and rapidly, which opened doors and lead way to so many great things, but also to what could have been the extinction of our specie. Warfare and technology have always gone hand in hand with one another, and this time tech was so advanced that it put us all at risk of near absolute mayhem.
While the third and last World War had all countries' official armed forces battling each other, not everyone who fought this war necessarily formed part of governmental organizations. Hacktivist groups around the globe would gratuitously offer lessons on how to obtain unauthorized access to anything that was powered by any sort of computing system. These guys' objective was to attack the enemy with tiny bits of information feeding from one server and infiltrating another, breaching into the network and shutting down governmental and social services, their intentions were to attack a country and make it crash economically, as means to destroy their power and not their people. They would breach into military establishments and deny them access to anything and everything outside their country, all while destroying data and information from within. War was much more efficient that way, no one needed to die in the process.
Still however, it was not the way things were destined to be. World War III was technologically advanced but not intellectually. Many countries still utilized guerrilla warfare tactics. The Islamic State was still forcing Sharia's law using mutilation and terrorism, North Korea nearly started a nuclear apocalypse, Russia was slowly turning away from decomcracy and closer to a dictatorship that focused on what they called a revolutionized Marxist ideology. The US carried out military exo-skeletons, airstrike drones were still very popular and much more destructive, and there is also this technology where soilders would undergo a micro chip brain implant that syncronizes with contact lenses attached to their eyes, creating an augmented reality for the user, this was effective for things like seeing directly through the scope of a drone's camera, or other probes, but it also morphed the physical appearances of the enemy to something less than human, making it easier for them to kill without a hint of remorse or sympathy. The chip would also interfere with their senses so they were unable to hear innocent civilians' cries for help and the smell of blood and shit were barely perceptible. All in all World War III changed everything, even our perspectives towards the meaning of warfare itself. And much like in earlier times, the invention of gunpowder defeated the purpose of building walls to protect our castles as it was no longer an effective form of defense, we too had to seek newer and more efficient methods to defend ourselves in this technologically advanced era.
