You flapped your large red wings above the vast ocean. You had been flying for days, and you were exhausted. Your limbs ached and your feathers felt as though they would fall off (you were sure that some had already done that). Your beak was dry and you longed for water (salt water wasn't an option). You also longed for a place to rest.

In all honesty, you weren't sure how much longer you would make it-

Wait, is that land? Could your eyes be deceiving you? Or was that truly an island?

It was. You couldn't believe it. You flapped your damaged wings as fast as they could go and soared towards the top of the island. You saw little specks of movement - so the island was inhabited. That was a good sign.

You saw a long ledge that led to a cave. You also saw a pool full of glittery water. Mouth watering, you flew towards it.

Unfortunately, due to your fatigue, you couldn't really land. It was more of a disoriented flop in the downward direction, followed by a somersault and hitting something sharp.

Then everything went dark.

~~~~~~~~~~
You awoke to someone nudging your shoulder. You let out a pained groan. Your body ached. The exhaustion was finally catching up to you and you felt sore.
"Who are you? I demand to know your name!" said a voice. It belonged to a man.
You craned your neck upwards to see him. He was a large eagle, and he held a pot in a defensive position.
"Why do you have a pot in front of your face?" You frowned.
"Because... I don't know actually. I don't trust you. And I want my perfect face to stay intact!"
"But isn't beauty subjective?" You frowned.
"You're one to boast. You're beautiful, so you can't complain," he blurted, then you could see him do a mental facepalm.
You felt your cheeks grow red but since your feathers were red already, he probably couldn't tell.
"Well I don't look very pretty in this position. Do you mind lending me a wing?" (Like lending someone a hand) You asked.
"Fine whatever," the eagle huffed and extended a wing towards you. He kept the other firmly on the pan.
You took it and hauled yourself up. It was painful, and a few bones cracked in the process, but you managed.
"Thanks," you sputtered, in a large deal of pain.
"Are you okay?" he asked, frowning. The pan involuntarily lowered.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Thanks. I guess I'll be on my way now," you said and began to limp away.
"Wait you're just going to leave?" he said in disbelief.
You turned back. "Well, yeah. What else would I do?"
"I dunno, you could tell me your name maybe?" The pot had been lowered so you could see his face.
"The name is (Y/N), why?"
"I'm Mighty Eagle, the only bird of flight on this entire island!" The bird dropped the pan and struck a pose.
"Uh, there are actually two birds of flight on this island," you pointed out.
"Not possible. I'm the only one," he said gallantly, still in his overly heroic pose.
"I can fly too, y'know," you rolled your eyes. He was egoistical, but kinda cute.
He gave a look that was a mix of surprise, annoyance, confusion and disbelief.
"You?"
"Yeah me. I'm a Phoenix, bird of flight and flame. Pleasure to meet you," you shot back.
His face now took on disappointment.
"I... But I'm the only one... That's my job... It's what I'm known for..." He looked really sad and lost as his gaze shifted down to the ground.
You shuffled toward him. You felt bad. You had meant to snap and hurt him. "Look, I didn't mean to take your job or whatever. I only would like some food and water and I'll be on my way. That's all."
"But where will you go to?" He asked, still as sullen as ever. The pot hung loose in his hand.
"I... I don't know. I don't have a home yet so I can't tell you." You shrugged.
"That's depressing," he said bluntly.
"Not really. I'm used to it I guess."
"Oh."
His eyes fell to your tail and they widened.
"Wait a second your tail is on fire!"
"I'm a Phoenix, remember? Bird of flame?"
"So your tail is always burning?"
"Not always. It's hard to explain. Now can I please come in, Mr. Mighty Eagle?"
He was startled by his name, but nodded. "Fine, you may come in."
You followed him through the door and limped through his lair. It was decent enough, but it was very cluttered. Suddenly, you felt a great pain in your head and your wing and you collapsed for the second time.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

You awoke again. Someone was pressing a cup full of liquid towards your mouth. Your eyes drowsily opened but things were still blurry.
"Drink. Drink (Y/N)." You heard a familiar voice say.
You let out a mumble and tried to clear your vision. You blinked and began to see. Mighty Eagle was offering you some water. You lifted one wing to try to drink it but it hurt painfully.

"Would you be so kind as to-" you began but he already figured it out. He rolled his eyes and tipped the glass you drank it as fast as you could. You felt a lot better after that - you had been so thirsty. You felt your strength begin to return.

"Thank you," you nodded gratefully. You looked around. You were seated on a couch, and your wing was in a painful position. Mighty Eagle coughed awkwardly.

"I'm no expert, but I believe you've damaged your wing," Mighty Eagle said bluntly. You noticed his cheeks were slightly red.

"Yeah, I think so too," you mumbled.

He smirked. "Who's the only bird of flight now?"

"Oh it's on. Once my wing recovers, I'm gonna beat you once and for all." Your eyes narrowed playfully.
"Is that a challenge? Because if so, you're on."
"I hope you like the taste of defeat, Not-So-Mighty Eagle."
"Now you've done it!" He stood up.

"Now how about we get you to a doctor?"
"Deal."
