Dimitri led us to a fancy restaurant just down the road from the hotel. I pulled my hair into a messy bun at the base of my neck.
Dimitri talked to the hostess for a minute, then waved us in. We had a private room in the back all to ourselves.
"What's this?" I asked, relaxing a bit.
"We wanted to do something special for you, since you were just kinda thrown into this life," Dimitri explained, "I am so proud of all the progress you have made and how well you've adjusted to life here."
I smiled slightly, then James pulled a chair out for me and I sat down. The food there was delicious! We had a true feast, and for dessert they brought out a custom-made cake that read, "You're in it for good." I laughed when I saw it and Dimitri cut the cake for everyone.
When we were almost done with the cake, a new waiter came out, carrying a stack of plates and a knife.
But... We already had plates. And a knife.
Dimitri saw it too and caught my gaze, sending me a silent message only I would get: Get out of here.
I stood up to go to the "bathroom" but the new waiter stopped me.
"Where are you going? The fun's about to begin!"
"I have to go to the bathroom," I said sweetly, "You know, mother nature."
He nodded. "I understand. Just one thing-" He took the knife off the plates, letting them crash to the ground. He swiped at me, but I ducked out of the way.
In that instant, a dozen more people came in brandishing various weapons. We were outnumbered.
Christian, Dimitri, and I formed a barricade between them and the others. Christian used his fire magic to keep them at bay, but every once in a while, someone would get brave and get through. That's where Dimitri and I came in.
We weren't killing them, just hurting them to the point where they wouldn't fight back. Several bodies lay crumpled on the ground within minutes.
Finally, when there were only 3 left standing, one of them spat, "The warriors of light are everywhere. We will never give up!" then limped out.
"We need to leave," Christian muttered, not moving. We all stood still.
"Ya think?" I retorted.
"Guys," Sydney breathed, "I knew him."
"What?" I asked, turning to look at her.
"I saw them when they were about to execute Sonya. His name is Chris," she explained.
"I remember him too," Dimitri said, throwing a couple hundred euro bills onto the table, "And we need to leave. Now."
"You mean-" I began.
"Leave the country," he specified.
No one said anything, but we all followed him out and back to the hotel. It was dark out, so we had the cover of the night to escape, but that wouldn't last long.
"Everyone pack up, we'll meet in the lobby in an hour," Dimitri commanded, "I'll find us train tickets."
I followed Sydney to our room and she helped me pack the new bags into our suitcases. Finally, we just gave up and she bought me a new suitcase from the shop.
An hour later, we all met in the lobby and Dimitri held up tickets he had gotten from the front desk.
"The train leaves at 11:30 and goes to Assisi, Italy, so that's where we'll go. It's an overnight trip, so I hope you all have pajamas near the top of your bags," Dimitri explained, "Jessica will stay with me. Sydney with Declan and James with Christian."
