Dean's shoulders hunched over when he heard the silence pierced by the flutter of wings. Not only was he terrified of what the angel would say, the realization that he'd have to sit through Cas' lecture was unbearable. Why didn't people get that he didn't want to be told how amazing he was? Why couldn't he sit and pity himself?
"Because you're amazing Dean", the angel replied. Dean hadn't noticed he had put voice to his thoughts. He immediately regretted being born because if he had done it this time, how many other times had he done it? How many things has he said aloud to Cas only to have Cas not reply?
"You don't know what you're talking about, man.", Dean snorted. If Cas thought this was going to be sentimental and gooey he was wrong. Dean didn't do chick flick moments.
"Damn it Dean, why are you such a hard ass?", Cas spat at him. He was tired of Dean's pity bullshit. He had had enough of sitting and watching Dean drink himself to death. He needed to know he cared. He needed to know that people, well beings, loved him with everything they had. He needed to know that Cas loved him.
Wait a minute. Did Cas just admit he loved Dean? Is that what the feeling was? Is this why Cas always felt like he was dying when Dean got even slightly sick? Why his stomach flipped when Dean would hug him? Or when his hand would drag across Cas' back after they had dropped the hug because he was distracted? Why Cas always wanted to hold Dean in his arms after a hunt him and Sam had been on and tell him the world still needed him and that he was important? Why Cas needed him like a fish needed water? Like Dean needed air?
Dean stared at the angel's face, which had gone from angered, to confused, to lightbulb in a matter of seconds. Dean almost asked but decided against it. It was probably some thing to do with his heavenly duties. Stupid Cas always busy with his angel crap. Dean wished he'd just stay home with him and watch movies or something. It'd get him mind off of the shit he's dealing with. At least for a little while. "Because I can be. Leave it alone." No, stop. He hadn't meant that. Stay please.
"Why don't you fuck yourself Dean.", Cas went to walk away from the solemn dock but stopped. He loved Dean, even when he was like this. Because that's when he needed someone the most. He turned around and his eyes caught Dean's. Cas could have sworn he saw pleading running through them but when Dean dropped his gaze he forgot of it. "Actually Dean. No, stand up."
Dean's left shoulder rolled as he groaned out a no. But Cas wasn't having stubbornness. He walked the few steps to Dean and pulled him up by his shirt collar. Dean held a look in his eyes that would've made any man back down. But Cas, just like every one knew, was no man.
"God damn Cas, what?" Dean nearly yelled at the angel when he didn't flinch against his gaze. Dean tried to shake his grip off but Cas didn't budge. He had something important to say and he was going to say it.
"I'm not going to lecture you. I'd be wasting my time since you've heard every word known to man about how great you are. But there is a simple epigram that you humans wrote that I am going to use for a second," and then Cas leaned really close to Dean and muttered a few words before connecting their lips: "Actions speak louder than words."
Dean shook with the force the angel applied to his lips. It was almost as if Cas was using his grace to magnify the kiss. Dean never wanted to move. He wanted to live on this quiet dock, with the small waves lapping the sides of the wooden pillars. He wanted to live here with the soft breeze ruffling his hair and the strong but sweet angel holding him in place.
Eventually Cas pulled away though and Dean was shaken by reality. An angel of the Lord just kissed him. An angel in a man's vessel. Dean kissed a guy. Technically speaking. And he wasn't even put off by the though. In fact he wanted to kiss the angel again. He wanted to feel his lips against his again. So he did the only thing he could think of right now and surged forward.
The second time they kissed it was even better. They were both aware rather then startled and it was amazing. The wind wad softer, the air cooler, the waves quieter but still there, and the angel soft in his arms.
This time it was Dean who pulled away. He was breathless yet wanted more. But first he wanted to say something.
"I love you Cas."
"I know Dean."
