Anaya and Adam went to the same middle school and the same high school, because of his cancer, Adam missed two years of school which he had to repeat and ended up in the same grade as Anaya. Their relationship didn't have a name, everyone knew they were soul mates, the McCees' knew and Niani knew but Anaya and Adam were in their own bubble. They had feelings for each other, it was obvious, the jealousy, the love and care, it was all there but they never even kissed. They only got closer to one another as the years went by, and when they were in their senior year of high school, Anaya found herself hoping that Adam would ask her to the prom. It was almost the end of the school year, Anaya and Adam were already accepted into the college of their choice, it was the same college, but that was only a coincidence. They both decided to go to the state college, Anaya decided to stay home because her mom was alone, and Adam's parents didn't let him go far because of his cancer, although in remission, they were not taking a chance with their son. One morning, a few weeks before prom, Anaya walked to Adam's house and waited for him. This was their little routine, to walk to and from school together. This morning however, Anaya was getting impatient. He still hasn't asked her to the prom yet, and she wants to go with him. Anaya knew she can ask him, but she wanted to be asked by him. She needed to know if he loved her the way she loved him. Adam obviously loved Anaya more than anything in the world, but he was too nervous to ask her. She had grown up to be the most beautiful girl he had ever known, with her mother to thank for that. Anaya inherited her mother's beautiful brown, tan skin, dark brown eyes with long eyelashes, her mother's long legs and curly, thick black hair that went down to her lower back and Adam sometimes wonders if she would even be with him, not knowing that without doing or saying anything, Anaya and Adam were already in the most intimate relationship.

Adam came out of his house and the two started to walk towards the school together.

"So, the year is ending." Anaya started the conversation, trying to gear it towards the prom.

"Yeah, I can't wait till we graduate." Anaya nodded.

"You're coming to prom though right?"

"I don't know, I haven't really thought about it. I was thinking of just staying home and watching a movie or something. I'm not much for dancing, you know?"

"Well, I was thinking of going."

"Seriously?"

"Yeah, it seems fun and the year is ending, so why not?"

"Well I'll probably just stay home." And with that Anaya got the hint, he did not want to go with her. That night when her mother came back from work, Anaya needed to vent.

"Mom, Adam doesn't like me." Niani was surprised.

"He said that?"

"Basically. He said he didn't want to go to prom." Her mother sighed.

"Anaya it is so obvious that boy loves you like crazy, I don't understand why you need him to go to prom with you."

"Mom, Adam and I were always together, it seems like we're only comfortable with each other. I want him to hold my hand, to kiss me. He would do that if he really loved me."

"Maybe he feels the same, and he's worried he'll ruin the relationship you already have. But what you two have can't be ruined, so just tell him how you feel."

Anaya was definitely going to prom, she even bought herself a beautiful long red wine colored dress. She decided she would tell Adam how she felt about him on the night of the prom.

So prom night came around, and it was a beautiful, warm night. Anaya got ready with some of her friends from school in her bedroom. She wore her long red dress with the sweetheart neckline that outlined her body beautifully, a deep red color on her lips that matched her dress and curled her hair and pulled it into an up do. Her makeup brought out her beautiful chocolate colored eyes and her naturally tanned skin was glowing. She looked into the mirror and was happy, she felt like a princess. She was also nervous because this was the night when she would tell Adam how much she loved him. While her friends got ready, Anaya heard her mother calling her. She went downstairs and saw Adam at the door wearing a tux, looking as handsome as ever. Her mother winked at her and went back to her room. Adam's eyes never left her. He smiled and she couldn't look away from that beautiful smile which only revealed his cheek dimples, his perfectly straight teeth and kind green eyes.

"Wow, Anaya you look so beautiful." Anaya felt herself blushing.

"Thank you, you don't look so bad yourself." Adam chuckled. "What are you doing here? I thought you didn't want to go to prom."

"Are you kidding? I knew how much you wanted to go so I thought I'd surprise you."

"Well it worked." Anaya gathered her courage and walked closer to him. "Adam, I want to tell you something."

"Tell me." She took a breath. She was not going back, this was it, she will tell this boy how she feels about him.

"Adam, I know we're really close, and it's always been a bond of two best friends between us, but I want more. I don't know when I realized this, or if you even feel the same way, but I love you. I think I always have but for some reason, we've known each other for more than 10 years and I never told you how much I'm in love with you. Everyone always says some things are shown with love, but I wanted to tell you how I feel about you. I am crazy in love with you Adam McCee." Anaya was scared of what he would say, what if he wanted to stay friends? But when she saw that smile of his that always made her feel safe, she felt relieved. Adam did not need to say more than,

"Well I love you too Anaya Mason, more than anything in this world." Then he pulled Anaya into his arms and kissed her. It was the first time they had ever kissed, but it was worth the wait. All of their unspoken, bottled up feelings for each other came out with that one kiss.

So the two of them went to prom together and had a lot of fun with each other. When the night was ending, Adam pulled Anaya closer and whispered in her ear.

"Let's get out of here." Nothing sounded better to Anaya who was the happiest person tonight.

The two left the high school prom and went over to Adam's house, his parents were out of town for work, it was just the two of them. Anaya said she wanted more from their relationship and she did. She wanted Adam tonight, she has waited too long for this night to come. Adam, as much as he wanted the same thing, was too nervous to do anything, not knowing what to do. It was the first time for both of them, and they were both equally nervous about that as well. But then Adam looked into Anaya's eyes and realized how much we wanted her, what he missed out on all those times he didn't kiss her beautiful lips and regretted not telling her his feelings before. He looked into her eyes, and she looked into his and the rest came effortlessly. It was a beautiful night, they both felt it. There was no worry, or nervousness. They were both in their safe place, where they felt they belonged. The next morning came, and then the next. After two weeks, graduation day arrived, and they graduated. The two were ready for the summer, to be with each other, and it was a wonderful summer for them, filled with more love than ever before. Even when fall came about and classes started, their love only grew stronger. They were always with each other, inseparable. The fall semester became the spring semester, Anaya and Adam knew what they wanted to do with their lives. Anaya decided to major in psychology, to help with people who have depression much like her mother did after her grandmother died and Adam became a pre-med student, to hopefully become an oncologist and treat cancers like his own, and they were both excelling in their classes. A year passed by, they were both done with their second year of college, Anaya now 20 and Adam 22. With certainty in their lives and a step closer to their dreams, they were both in a content place.

One evening, the two were laying onAdam's bed, holding hands, fingers intertwined.

"We can get married, soon." Anaya looked at him when he said that.

"Well of course we could, but maybe we should wait until we're done with school. We're graduating in two years."

"I meant after we graduate, but I was just saying that we should get married." Anaya kissed him.

"No matter when you propose, I will say yes." Adam was staring at her.

"It's good you said that." He got up from the bed, and went to his dresser, and pulled something out. His back was to her but she knew it was a ring.

"Adam, is that what I think it is?" He turned around, with a look of discomfort on his face. He was about to bend on one knee, but as soon as he bent, he fell over, the ring went under the bed and his prosthetic leg came off. Anaya, horrified, screamed his name and ran over to him but Adam could not move. It was like the night before he was diagnosed with his cancer.
