In the mirror she smiled at her beautiful reflection,

Love on her mind, didn't expect the impending rejection.

There she stood, ready for her wedding,

And gazed at her father, who'd given her everything.

But when she looked at the altar to steal a glance,

Her loving husband had run off in advance.

She gasped and looked around with tears in her eyes,

But he was long gone and deaf to her cries.

Blinded by misery, she took off in a run,

While he still remained oblivious to what he had done.

Alone in her chambers, late at night,

A knock on the window gave her a fright.

From the balcony a mist had gathered,

And in through the doors a dark figure staggered.

With naught but a wailing heard down the hall,

And not a single answer to her father's call,

She vanished into the dead of night,

Only one last goal was within her sight.

By the edge of the water, she finally stopped.

Still wearing her gown, now covered in rot.

With a sigh, she slid down the muddy bank,

And in mid-stream, she finally sank.

The moonlight danced on the still body of water,

Leaving no sign of a long lost daughter.

Every year, by the river, was held a candle-lit vigil,

When, one night, from the depths came a ripple,

And a faint glimmer of light danced through the trees,

With a swirling mist, brought a father to his knees.

Before him stood a figure of light,

Bringing a glimmer of hope in the dead of night.

In silence he watched, and mourners stared,

As her final goodbye was declared.

Before she could pass, a man did approach,

With hollow apologies and a look of reproach.

A single request was what he desired,

After all these years and what had transpired;

And yet all knew how difficult the request would be,

For the words he whispered, were 'Forgive me.'
