It's Been A While

It had been almost 3 months since McCree had been sent out on a mission, and the seventeen-year-old couldn't wait to get back to HQ and rest. But there was one other thing he couldn't wait to get back and do. It was his favorite pass time. And that was teasing the girl they called Dragonfly. Thalia Anastos.

When the two had first meant, it was clear that there was no friendship that was going to be blooming anytime soon. The fifteen-year-old girl was a lanky little thing. Sure she had muscle and was strong, but there was no definition. The wings that gave her the name of 'Dragonfly' were too big for her at the time, she hadn't grown into them yet, which made her look even skinnier. She was all knees and elbows, despite her background in the military. And that's what Jesse McCree had taken to calling her, 'Knees and Elbows.' And Thalia wasn't to happy about it. At one point she got so aggravated by the nickname, she took his Peacekeeper and threatened to shoot him with it. The memory made the cowboy chuckle.

Oh how he had missed teasing Thalia.

Once he had finally made it to HQ and turned in his mission report, he began his next mission. His own personal mission.

Mission: Find the Dragonfly

And he was off. Off in search of the girl to tease her. He had a lot of time to make up for, a whole 3 months.

It was almost an hour that he had searched and still no sign of the flying girl. He removed his hat and scratched his head. Maybe she was on a mission? Nah! Reyes would've told him if his favorite play thing was gone. She had to be somewhere in the base. Jesse replaced his hat atop his head, determination in his eyes, and set off again to find Thalia.

Another half hour later, and STILL nothing! He was so frustrated, he took off his hat and threw it on the ground.

"Well, Shoot! Where the Sam Hill is she!?" he growled to himself with his hands on his hips. Eventually, Jesse sighed, and picked up his hat, ready to call it quits for the day. Maybe he would find her tomorrow at breakfast. That would be fun! Agreeing with his new plan, Jesse turned around and started to walk toward his room, ready for some well deserved sleep. But something stopped him. A sound. A familiar sound he hadn't heard in a while. The beating of wings. Insect wings.

Dragonfly wings.

Jesse immediately turned tail and started to follow the sound. Finally! He was on her trail. He was gonna be able to find the Bug today! McCree ran down the hallway searching for the winged girl. Eventually he found himself in front of Reyes' office.

'Wow. Never thought i'd be here and NOT be in trouble,' Jesse thought as he walked up to the door. The sound of Thalia's beating wings was clearly behind the door, there was no doubt about it. Jesse smirked to himself. He fixed his hat so it sat straight on his head, seeing as with all the running, the wind he created had knocked his cowboy hat slightly askew.

"Hey, Knees and Elbows. Hope you didn' miss me to much, dar-," he stopped dead in his tracks, eyes wide at the sight before him. "-lin'?" There was defiantly another person in the room with him, but, it couldn't possibly be who he thought it was supposed to be. But there was no one else who had dragonfly wings and could fly.

Thalia was there, but this wasn't the Thalia that McCree remembered. The Thalia that he remembered was short and skinny as a rake. Her Blackwatch uniform didn't fit her just right, because there was nothing small enough for her. She looked like a half grown kid.

But this Thalia...This Thalia was nothing like what he remembered. This wasn't a child, this was a woman. A young woman. Thalia, apparently, had grown up. And grown up fast. She had finally grown into her wings, and she obviously had to get a new uniform. She filled in the new one rather nicely, in Jesse's opinion.

At the sound of the noise that Jesse had made, Thalia, who was hovering in the air with use of her wings, organizing Reyes' files, turned with her eyebrow raised in both curiousness and irritation at being interupted. When she spotted the awe struck Jesse McCree standing in the doorway, a smirk of her own made its way on to her lips.

"Hello, cowboy," she said. Even her voice had changed, Jesse noted. No longer did she sound like a young boy. Her voice had gone up and sounded more melodious. "I see you've come back in one piece," she continued as she turned back and continued to organize file after file.

McCree couldn't talk, he was so in shock. Three months did this!? There was no way! It had to be a trick. But there was no way to justify any mischief. She was, right there in front of him. Plain as day.

"Cowboy. Cowboy? COWBOY!" Jesse jumped at the sudden loud noise. Dragonfly was hovering in front of him, her hands on her hips, glaring down at him. "Are you listening to me?"

"Uh...um..." Jesse only stared, incoherent sounds falling out of his mouth. This caused Thalia to roll her eyes at the half-wit in front of her.

"I asked if your mission was a success," she repeated herself as she crossed her arms in front of her chest, waiting for the answer. Jesse only nodded his head.

Thalia smiled with a knowing look on her face. She knew she had changed. She wasn't an idiot. She wasn't oblivious to the stares she got nowadays. She also wasn't oblivious to her old clothes not fiting anymore.

"Good," she said as she uncrossed her arms. "And, don't worry, I missed you McCree," she said as she patted his cheek. "But only because no one else would," she added, laughing. Jesse glared at her. He was about to say something in response, but she cut him off. "I've got things to do, people to see. I'll see you around, Cowboy," she said.

Then, Thalia pulled his hat down over his eyes, flipped in the air, and flew out the still open door to Reyes' office, disappearing down the hall. Leaving only her laughter in her wake.

McCree quickly went to pushing his hat back up into place, and turning around to catch Dragonfly. But she was long gone. McCree only whistled, that long whistle that shows you're impressed. He a smile on his face.

"I 'spect this means no more 'Knees and Elbows,'" Jesse said to himself as he put his hands in his pockets.

"Who the hell is in my office?" A voice could be heard from down the hall. The voice made Jesse flinch in terror.

Reyes.

Jesse made the quick decision to book it out of the room and down the hall.

"MCCREE!"

His name was followed by a string of Spanish. Everyone could guess what Gabriel was saying, but none of it was good.
