chapter vingt -Mirage-

I felt like I should have been screaming like Dannie and Sebastian, but I couldn't find my voice as we skidded off the road. I felt like my heart was in my throat, cutting off my words.

When we stopped, for a moment no one said anything, all I heard was the sound of our frantic lungs gasping for air. Then Sebastian's voice came out in a weak whisper. "Sorry," He said shakily. "Is everyone okay?" I gave an affirmation and I turned to look at Dannie, my neck felt stiff but I felt otherwise fine.

She was shaking, but she seemed to be okay. "I'll..." She looked at me blankly for a second before seeming to collect herself. "We need to get out of the car." Sebastian nodded tersely and switched off the engine while we scrambled out of the car. Once We were safely out, Dannie called 911 and we waited in silence for a few moments.

Finally she broke the silence and said, "At least the car doesn't seem too messed up," And she was right, the only real problem with the car was a crack in the windshield. "So...are we going to talk about you two or..." She trailed off, looking at me.

I shrugged and plucked at the grass. Sebastian sighed beside me but didn't say anything, which was odd, but I figured I should say something for both of us. "I've had a crush on him pretty much since he got here. We've been dating for almost a month." I said trying to rub heat into my freezing hands.

She frowned. "Well," She started but the tow truck pulled up then, cutting off whatever she was planning to say. Dannie stood up and jogged over to the flashing truck and soon it was just me and Sebastian. I reached over to grab his hand but he jerked it away to my suprise. For a second I wasn't sure what to say, because he'd never done that. Then I fumbled to form a response "Wh...are you okay?"

He didn't respond for a moment, then he said in a quiet tone of voice, "Why did you do that?"

"Do what?" I said as I put my hands over my ears to try to muffle the wind whispering around us.

"You just...outed me without asking me," His voice had an edge to it, but I couldn't tell if he sounded more angry or upset. His tone sounded strained when he spoke next. "I know...you must have meant well but that really caught me off guard if you couldn't tell."

"It's done now," I said quietly and he abruptly turned to me.

"My point is you didn't talk to me about it before you told her, you didn't ask if you could out me!" He snapped and I groped around for words I couldn't find. When I didn't reply he just shook his head. "Sometimes you just don't...think."

"What's that supposed to mean?" I said feeling my face get hot. "You said earlier in the library that you 'wouldn't mind getting outed because you'd be leaving anyway'!" I shot back at him.

Hw threw his hands up in exasperation. "Forgive me for thinking that you'd at least give me a little warning before hand." He no longer sounded angry, which somehow only served to make me feel worse. He abruptly stood up and walked away towards Dannie.

I hugged my knees to my chest, trying to ignore how it felt like I had just been punched in the gut. Was that person he was talking about in such an angry tone me? I was that absent minded person who didn't think?

Maybe it was, but if that was me, he was the person who told me it was okay to out him, only to to back on that a few hours later.

Feeling unsettled and an upset, I made my way over to the tow truck with the two of them and for the next couple of minutes we we figured out the logistics, neither me or Sebastian making an effort to talk to the other. Even during the ride back, we didn't look at each other. I felt a small pain in my chest as I stared out the foggy window, but I pushed it down and let the crackly radio drown out my thoughts.
