My head is spinning as I stumble down the staircase. Everyone is running around and bumping into each other. The sirens are louder which means they are closer.
"Hayley!" Tyler shouts as he sees me. "We need to get out of here!" Tyler grabs my hand and we run down the passage trying to find an exit.
"Here you guys are." Morgan, Caleb and Matthew says in relief.
There are bright lights that blind my eyes from the window. The police kicks in the front door.
Fuck.
We run towards the back door but when Matthew opens it, a police officer tackles him down. They tackle all of us down. By the amount of force on the ground, I could tell it was a man. I never would have thought that I'd ever wear handcuffs. Everything is blurry and the smell of weed in this house is evident. Everyone got out just in time but unfortunately we were the unlucky ones. They walk us to the police vans and put us all in the same one. Spectators from the neighborhood watch five teenagers get arrested. We wait till they lock the back door of the van before we speak.
"How did they find us?" Caleb asks
Tyler rolls his eyes. "Who cares about how, we need to know what we gonna do about it now."
Everyone breaks eye contact due to guilt.
"Hayley?" Morgan frowns.
They all turn to me for leadership in this predicament. No matter what had happened between us, they are my family and I would not let anything happen to them.
"We don't say anything." I tell them. "Always and forever right?"
They all look at each other and nod. "Always and forever."
The police officer opens the door and leads us to the holding cell. We wait a while before the head detective arrives and takes us out one by one to question us.
First they take Morgan, then Matthew, Caleb, Tyler and last but not least they come for me.
"Let's go" The police officer instructs.
He puts me in the questioning room and I sit down. There's a huge mirror hanging in front of me which of course people can see me through it on the other side. I've watched a lot of movies to know what's about to happen.
There's a glass of water in front of me. The only reason they put it down is to get my finger prints. The police doesn't care if criminals are thirsty.
A detective walks in after a long time of waiting.
"Sorry to keep you waiting" he says
I look in his eyes to show dominance. "No you're not."
My head is still spinning and I've got a hangover.
The detective looks at me with curiosity. "Still hungover?"
"Doesn't really concern you now does it" I snarl at him
He smiles and continues to look at the file in his hands. "As I can tell from your student file you were quite the A-student. Until last year, then you started slacking." He mocks. "Really, a C? Come on now. So I'm guessing that's the time you started dealing right?"
"I have no idea what you're talking about"
He slams his hands on the table. "You know exactly what I'm taking about!"
I stare at him blankly.
"You a smart girl, why would you deal drugs?"
"You right I am a smart girl.. That's why I don't"
He sighs "Why was your marks suddenly dropping?"
I sit back in a relaxed position. "Maybe I was in love." I shrug. "Maybe that's why my marks were dropping? I was focused on a guy and not my work. It happens"
He observes my body language and facial expressions but what he doesn't know is that I'm doing the same to him. I can tell that he's only been on the job for a while, he knows what to say and look for unlike rookies. He's a smoker due to his teeth and the smell of tobacco on him.
He smiles. "I can tell you the brains in your group."
"Is that so?" I ask sarcastically
"Yes. Your friends weren't nearly as cocky as you." He says "well except that guy Tyler."
I hide the smile that wants to burst out when I hear his name.
"Mm.. I'm guessing from that smile he's your boyfriend?"
"No"
"But you want him?" He smirks "if you don't help me, I will put him in juvy for a long time."
"You can't do that!" I yell.
"Oh but I can"
"He's done nothing wrong."
"Well let's see here." He looks in the file again. "Eighteen unpaid parking tickets, assault of a deadly weapon, been arrested twice for possession of weed and cocaine."
My eyes fall to the ground as I hear things of Tyler that I never knew. "Still want to cover up for your friends?"
I hesitate. "What do you want to know?" I ask
He leans forward. "I want to know everything."
"Fine. I hope you have time cause it's a long story."
