AN: The media is Alec and Magnus' suits :)
Edit: idk if it's just on my end or not but the media isn't showing correctly so I'm not sure if you guys see both or just Alec's. There's a description of Magnus' in the chapter so it doesn't really matter lol.The host led them through the main dining room to a smaller, quieter room in the back with only a few other guests, all dressed in clothes probably worth more than Alec made in three years. He mumbled a thank you as the host sat them and gave them menus, too busy staring out the huge window to his left to really pay attention.
"Wait, did you say something?" He flushed as Magnus laughed.
"I was asking if you had ever been to a place like this before."
"No, I haven't." Alec suspected Magnus had already figured that out, with the way he was looking at him with an amused look in his eyes. Alec couldn't help but stare as waiters and waitresses past by with delicious looking food and at the wealthy people around him. His gaze, however, always ended up back at Magnus. In his dark purple suit with a shining gold tie, and shoes that matched, and his hair fixed in a messy but neat kind of way. He radiated confidence and elegance, brighter than anyone in the restaurant, and Alec couldn't help but feel insignificant next to him.
The waitress came by and asked if they wanted wine. Magnus said yes while Alec declined the offer and ordered a water. Magnus gave him some suggestions on what to order, and what to stay clear of, and when she brought them their drinks, he ordered the safest thing he could find.
"So Alexander," Magnus began, taking a drink of wine. "Do you enjoy working at Java Jones?"
"Oh, well I," Alec started to answer, but at that time his phone starting ringing. Normally, he wouldn't have answered it, but after checking to see who the caller was, he had to. "I'm sorry, I have to take this." He apologized and answered the phone, walking a little way from the tables so not to disturb the other people.
"Isabelle, what's wrong? Did something happen?" He asked, panicking slightly. There was no telling what might have gone wrong with Izzy babysitting. He loved his sister, but she got distracted easily sometimes.
"Everything's fine, except she won't stop crying and she won't eat anything. She keeps throwing it on the floor." Alec pinched his nose, sighing.
"Izzy, did you cook?" She replied with a yes and he shook his head. No wonder Scarlet was throwing a fit. "Okay, there's some food and snacks in the cabinet for her. Just don't feed her too much, she likes to eat more than she can handle sometimes." He looked at the clock the opposite wall of the room. "It's getting late so she'll probably go to sleep soon. You shouldn't have any problems getting her to bed, she's good about that." Alec rambled off the instructions quickly, feeling bad for leaving Magnus to answer his phone.
Meanwhile, Magnus was sitting back in his chair, watching Alec as he took his phone call. Normally he would be upset if someone answered their phone on a date, but he saw the panic clearly in Alec's eyes and knew it was important. Magnus saw his shoulders relax after answering it. Whatever it was, it wasn't as bad as he thought apparently. He also talked with his hands. Magnus found that amusing. Everything about Alec was amusing to him, but not in a bad way, in an adorable way. He was so different than everyone else in Magnus' life and he was so special. He acted like he was invisible and trivial, but he shone with a special light, a kind of light that could outshine anyone if he chose to. But he didn't, that's what made him special.
"I'm so sorry about that. My sister is having some baby issues." Alec laughed lightly as he sat down. Magnus shrugged, but he didn't look upset.
"Troublesome little things. Babies I mean. Though I'm sure sisters can be to sometimes." Magnus joked but Alec felt his heart sink. So he didn't like kids. Great.
"Um, yes, they can be a handful sometimes." He replied.
"I was never good around children, and I never wanted to have any. It's one reason why my ex and I got divorced." Magnus sighed, taking another drink. He didn't know why he brought up that time in his life. Something about Alec made him just want to talk, he was so easy to talk to.
"Oh," Alec wasn't quite sure what to say. He hadn't thought about Magnus being married before. It made sense though, he was ten years older than him. He just couldn't see him being the type to settle down at a younger age. "Well, sorry about that." Wow good job Alec, solid response you have there. He wasn't sorry at all, because he wouldn't be here right now talking to this wonderful man if he was still married.
"Don't be," Magnus said with a wave of his hand. "We were young and I was stupid. She wanted to get away from the partying and the late nights out and settle down, have kids, the whole shebang. I wasn't ready for that. I liked to go out, I didn't want to be stuck at home with a little kid running around causing messes." Magnus pursed his lips, stopping his rant there. He was not about to drag Camille into this conversation, not on the first date. It would be just fine with him if he never talked about it to Alec at all. He saw what looked like disappointment on Alec's face for just a moment then it was gone.
Of course he wouldn't like kids, Alec thought. He was obviously a man that traveled and jumped from person to person, he wouldn't want to get stuck with someone who had a child. Alec could hardly breathe for a moment, then put on his mask. The one that said 'I'm fine. Don't worry about me, I'm having a great time.' He felt like such an idiot. What was I thinking coming out tonight? There was no way a man like Magnus would be interested in a guy like Alec. He was just another fling for him. Alec wasn't sure if that bothered him or not.
Thankfully the food arrived before Alec had to say anything. It probably would have come out snarky if he had. They were both quiet for a while as they ate. Then Magnus carefully directed the conversation to Alec.
"You said you have a sister, do you have any other siblings?" That seemed like a safe question. Even after just knowing him for a short time, Magnus wanted to learn everything he could about Alec. He was so intrigued by him unlike anyone he had been with before.
"Yes, a younger brother and an adopted brother. His fiancé, and my sister's boyfriend as well, are basically family, too. We've been through a lot together." Alec couldn't help but smile as he thought about his little family. Then his smile vanished when Magnus asked about his parents.
"Well, I haven't seen them in a little over a year. They cut me off completely when I came out." Alec stared at his food, biting the inside of his lip.
"I'm sorry Alexander. That's a hard thing to deal with." Magnus' voice was gentle and sincere. Alec met his gaze and smiled a little. He loved the way he said his name. When anyone else called him Alexander, it felt weird. He was Alec. But Magnus said it in a way that made him melt and relax.
"It's alright. I've managed." Alec said with a small shrug.
After that, they avoided large topics and just talked about little things. How did Alec like working at Java Jones. Where Magnus worked. Alec found out he worked at his family's company as an executive next to his father. That was why he traveled a lot. Alec didn't mention Scarlet. They ended up getting caught up in talking that Alec lost track of time. When he glanced over at the clock on the wall, he nearly choked on his water. It was after 11 already. Then he noticed how they were the only people in the room.
"Magnus, I have such a great time tonight. But I do need to be getting home. I have to open at work tomorrow." Alec said.
"Oh yeah, you're right. We do need to get going. This place closed at ten thirty." Magnus grinned widely. He had already paid the check, not letting Alec see how much it was despite his protests, so they were able to leave quickly.
The cool night air and city sounds hit Alec in a wave as he walked out of the building. He stood there awkwardly, not knowing what to say, and picked at the end of his jacket sleeve.
"Are you sure you don't want me to drive you home?" Magnus asked for the third time.
"No, it's okay. I'll get a cab." Alec shook his head. There was no way he was letting Magnus anywhere near his dumpy apartment. Alec also didn't want him to meet Scarlet. He felt bad for not mentioning her, but he didn't want to ruin whatever chance he had with Magnus, if he even had one, right off the bat. He liked him too much to not see him again. Magnus looked at him frowning, probably upset he couldn't take him home.
"Okay, if you're sure," Alec nodded. "Well I had a fantastic evening with you Alexander. We'll have to get together again soon." Magnus smiled at him in a cheeky way. Alec blushed, smiling to himself. They arranged to meet for lunch next week at a less high-class place. They said goodbye and Alec got in his cab to go home.
Magnus stood on the sidewalk watching the cab drive off before heading to the parking garage to find his own car. He couldn't stop smiling as he thought about seeing Alec again. There was just something about him that made Magnus feel warm and comforted inside. He had had multiple people in his life after his divorce but none lasted more than a few weeks, and none made him feel the way he felt right now. He didn't remember even feeling this when he was with Camille, maybe in the beginning, but it vanished after they got married. She became controlling and harsh, rarely comforting to him. That was one reason he stayed out so late. Yes he flirted carelessly with other people but he was always faithful to her. Not that she could say the same about him.
Magnus shook his head to stop the flood of thoughts he had been building a wall around to keep contained. He didn't want to think about all of that tonight. He just wanted to enjoy the buzz he had from Alec's smile.Meant to upload this part yesterday but got caught up with school work. I have a couple other chapters written ready to post, but I'm not sure if I want to go ahead and post them now or wait and post one in a couple days then the next later. Let me know what you guys would like for me to do. Again, thanks for reading =D
