This is probably the most major one out of them all. I mean, cmon! Most OCS I've seen (Most Are Undertale Ones and well.. They ain't the best (No Offence To The Undertale community (Plz...))) either lack personality or are a "Mary/Gary Sue" (Depending On Gender). What's That You May Ask? A character that is ALWAYS perfect. E.g Everyone likes them, they control the world, they are super rich Etc. And I'm going to tell you how to avoid that...
How NOT To Make A Mary/Gary Sue.
The first thing is to get their main personality, like what is their goal or whatever, unless it's still in its childhood so maybe it doesn't know, it is your OC, after all. Now, the next step is traits. And before you do anything.. Remember: Bad Traits Can Be Good For Your Oc To Be.. Well a Original Character. But don't make it have too negative or positive traits, it's like a scale, you have to balance it out. I haven't made many OCS. But one I have as an example is CopyWRONG (An Undertale OC, with a cringe worthy name, and ok, the drawing is worse than the name.(that sentence was cringy.... Eh)) who thinks that he's better than everyone, but has a bit of a soft spot. Or, if you make it about yourself, then well, why read this and go look in the mirror too see your OC RIGHT in front of you?
