SCENE 1

In the holding cells of the courthouse. Victor sits in his cell reading. HENRI approaches.

HENRI

Hello, Victor...

VICTOR

(pauses)

Hello.

HENRI

I'm sorry I have to...

VICTOR

Oh shut up you fool. You thought of me with complete contempt from the start. Don't apologise to me now before you put me on the scaffold.

HENRI

...well, since you're too impetuous to listen to anything I have to say, this came for you. Why it was delivered to me I don't know.

HENRI hands VICTOR an envelope.

VICTOR

Burn it. I don't care.

HENRI

I have no use for it.

VICTOR

Burn it, idiot.

HENRI

Grow up, Victor.

HENRI exits, throwing the envelop on the floor. After he has exited, VICTOR looks at the envelope and tries to ignore it. After some time he picks it up and opens it.

VICTOR

(reading the letter)

Dear Victor, by this time you may well be dead. I should write to you to tell you that I am never far from you. You may run but I am here. Even past death, I am here. How? Well, you are reading this aren't you? I found you. I will always find you. You cannot escape me, Doctor. When will you learn? The voice that crieth in the wilderness prepareth not a way for me, it says that you are my master, but the Father of lies tells me you are good. What you did to the world, what you did to me... you will never deserve to meet your maker- only the lonely, deserted depths of hell, so you may feel for eternity what I feel, and the meaning of my existence. Loneliness, oblivion. You are alone, no one wants you. I will follow you forever to tell you. Adam.

VICTOR throws the letter to the floor, and grunts. He pauses. He goes back to reading. As if he can't stop looking at it, he picks it up and tears it to pieces, with tears.

VICTOR

(to himself)

It... it found me... it found me again...
