SCENE 3
In the countryside, outside a small orthodox chapel. PIMEN walks outside the chapel, and picks up a balalaika. He plays it briefly.
PIMEN
I wonder where that strange man went. He hasn't been here in so many years... bozhe moy.
HENRI enters. PIMEN is blind and cannot see him and does not notice he is there.
HENRI
Um... hello...?
PIMEN
(gasp) Who are you?
HENRI
Just... a person.
PIMEN
Your name
HENRI
...Victor...
PIMEN
Oh... you were here some years ago... your voice has changed much.
HENRI
...yes... I um... yes. I'm not here to talk about God...
PIMEN
Then why in his name are you here?
HENRI
..what can you tell me about Jacob and Esau?
PIMEN
The loss of birthright? It sparked a bitter conflict that still rages today...
(pause)
HENRI
Brother, why...why is he still out there?
PIMEN
Adam? Original sin will always exist.
(pause)
HENRI
Did... Clerval come here?
PIMEN
I don't know.I don't understand why Clerval would come here at all, but his carriage was apparently seen at Zurich months ago... if you want to go to meet him he might be there.
HENRI
Ugh. No.
(pause)
PIMEN
Victor.
HENRI
Yes?
PIMEN
Forgive him. He knows not what he does.
HENRI
No, Brother. He knows.
