" THE SPLENDID THING ABOUT FALLING APART SILENTLY IS THAT YOU CAN START OVER AS MANY TIMES AS YOU LIKE "—
Will Byers was one of the smartest kids Angela ever knew.
She often saw him around with her little brother, David. He hangs around with Will Byers and other friends. Angela's met Will more than once – either David was at his house or Will was at theirs. David looked up to Will in a way that he could never do with Angela. To some extent, that fact upset her, but then she remembered her situation.
While Angela had straight platinum blonde hair and porcelain skin, David was the complete opposite. He had completely dark curly hair and perfectly tanned skin. This may seem like a regular adoption situation, but it was so much more than that.
"Angie, guess what!"
Angela looked over to David, who sat in the passenger seat of her Alliance, staring up at her with excitement. Ever since Will has gone missing, David's been a little miserable.
"What is it, dork?" Angela chuckled, pulling the car out of the driveway. It was amusing to see the smile on his face, especially when she hadn't seen it in some time.
"I think I know where Will is!" he exclaimed as Angela pulled into the road.
"David, that's not funny," Angela said to him sternly. "Will's actually missing, you can't just-"
"No, I'm serious! I heard him; he was in our bathroom light!"
Angela turned down the road towards the elementary school, looking down at her brother. "I know you like to make up stories and all, but this one really isn't entertaining."
"This isn't a story. I'm telling the truth!" David pressed, getting agitated with Angela. "He needs our help, Angela. He's trapped."
Angela glanced down at David, but didn't say another word to him, until after she dropped him off and drove back home, passing the high school on the way.
She parked her car in the driveway of her empty house. It was seven o'clock by now, so both of her parents should be gone.
Getting out of the car, Angela grabbed her backpack and trudged up to the front door, unlocking it and walking through.
Everything was quiet. Angela couldn't really believe that she was actually listening for Will, but David's theory wasn't all that crazy. Angela couldn't let David know that Will could actually be where she thinks he is. He definitely wasn't in the lights.
"Will?" Angela called out, looking around at the lights in her home. She walked through the rooms, turning on every single light she could find.
"Will, it's Angela, David's sister," she said, her eyes searching for a sign that Will was listening. "If you can hear me..."
The light at the back of the hall blinked once. Angela's assumptions were right.
"Oh, no, Will," she mumbled in despair, running over to the wall light in the corridor by her bedroom. The light blinked again, except rapidly this time, as if Will was trying to convey his fear.
"Will, listen to me," Angela started, setting her hands on the wall to try and comfort the boy, but she knew that he couldn't feel her. "I know where you are, but it's going to take a little bit for me to get there, okay? Can you wait for me? Can you hang in there?"
The light blinked once, so Angela took that as a yes.
"Okay, good," Angela said, letting out a breath. "You'll be okay, just keep hiding. You're a smart kid, Will."
Angela stepped away from the light, staring at it in despair. She didn't want to leave Will all alone, but she had no choice. She had to tell someone where to find him, and that someone was his brother.
"We'll find you, Will. Don't worry."
