Chapter One: The Pendant
Cedar Lake, Indiana, Present Day
Beep. Beep. Beep.
"Ugh!" Tiana Dimir groaned as she hit the snooze button on her alarm clock. It was 6:45AM, and Tiana wanted nothing more than to just go back to sleep. That, however, wasn't happening.
"Tiana!" her mother's Romanian laced voiced reached her ears, and Tiana groaned louder. "Tiana, you must get ready for school."
School.
Tiana groaned again. She didn't want to go to school; it was the start of a new week. A Monday.
"Tiana!"
With one last groan, Tiana rolled off her bed, stood, and made her way to the bathroom. She brushed her teeth first, then shucked her clothes off to take a shower.
A hot shower and thirty minutes later, Tiana was dressed and walking down the steps to the kitchen. She had on jeans, a black tank and a light sweater, her ever present pendant around her neck. Her mother, Sonia Dimir, was standing in front of the stove, spatula in one hand, a plate full of bacon and eggs, in the other.
"Buna dimineata, mama," Tiana said to her mother.
"Good morning," she replied in English. "You will be late, yes?"
Her mom turned around and handed the plate to Tiana. Tiana shook her head, "No, I still have a half hour."
"Good. You will eat." The way she said it, Tiana couldn't help but listen. Her mother had this way about her. It was regal, sophisticated, and it demanded the people around her to listen.
Tiana sat and ate. At seven-thirty-five on the dot, a car horn sounded.
"Lori is here," Tiana said, standing up. She grabbed her bad at the door and walked out. Her best friend, Lori Shayne, was in her Dodge Durango. The passenger window was down and Tiana could see Lori applying some lip-gloss.
For some reason, something else caught her attention. A shadow of some sort? Looking around, Tiana's gaze was suddenly drawn to a figure across the street, two houses down. It was boy-no, he wasn't a boy. He was male. Tall. He leaked of mystery, danger...yet, he still managed to have a calm way about him. As her eyes drifted to his face, Tiana blushed. He was staring right at her. He had dark features; dark hair, tanned skin. The only thing that wasn't dark was his eyes. They were a light brown, rimmed with gold. In a single word, they were extraordinary. He was wearing regular faded jeans, and a button up shirt.
"Tiana!"
Lori's voice managed to wind their way into Tiana's mind, causing her to look at her friend. Lori tapped her watch-less wrist, "Time is of the essence."
Taking a final glance in the direction of the mysterious stranger, Tiana found herself staring at only a house.
He was gone.
She shook her head. Had I really seen that? she thought to herself. He looked real enough.
She stepped into the Durango.
"What was that all about?" Lori asked, pulling away from the curb.
"I have no idea. I thought I saw someone standing in front of that house," she said, pointing to the house as they drove pass.
