The next time those eyes entered his world, it was nearly two months later. Dan was at his house, with Chris, and Phil had just broken up with his girlfriend. So Dan closes his eyes. And he remembers.
Phil didn't want to move. Why would he? His girlfriend had been cheating on him. Not even she had cared about him.
It was then, he heard voices, and the front door opening. PJ's voice drifted up to him.
'Hey guys! How've you been? Really! Same! Oh, well...he's just been hiding up in his room. Yeah, refusing to talk to anyone. Oh, no, Dan, I wouldn't...nope too late.'
A knock came at the door. And a voice.
'Um, hi Phil. It's me, Dan, you might not remember me, but I was at that party a while ago. I was the one who insisted you were...' He cleared his throat. 'Um, Gertrude. Yeah, I never got to apologise for that night. My behaviour was awful. But hopefully entertaining. Anyway, I heard about your breakup. And I'm really sorry about that. I was also wondering if you talk to me about it. I figure it would be easier to talk to someone who you don't know very well. Therefore, I can't really judge. What do you say?'
A silence. Then-
'Come in.'
Dan breathed a sigh of relief. And opened the door to Phil's room.
'Hi.'
'Hello.' A small smile. 'Would you like to talk?'
'Um, yeah. Ok, before I start, I don't want you to laugh, or anything. The first time I broke up with a girlfriend, my parents laughed at me. That was harrowing.' Dan was nodding his head supportively, telling him to go on, and reassuring him that wouldn't happen. 'Ok, so I thought, we were going well. She was nice, I really liked her, and I though she liked me. Apparently, she didn't. She liked another guy. She was using me to make her seem unavailable, and therefore appealing. It worked. She started to go out with him, on dates. But, it seemed she forgot to tell me she wasn't interested anymore. The first I heard about, was when one of my friends, saw them out, and kissing.'
Dan sighed. He knew Phil was not over it, and needed help. He probably wasn't the one to help, but meh. It was the only thing to do.
'Well if it helps, I broke up with my, um, partner, a while ago. So, yeah, I know what you're going through. Actually, my parents were the one who made me break up with them. They didn't like my partner. But I'm over him now. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is, well, she obviously didn't appreciate you as a person, or else she wouldn't have cheated. She's not worth your pain. Um...yeah. Ok, I'm sorry, that didn't really help.'
Phil smiled. At least Dan tried. And, if he was honest, it sorta did help.
'Thanks.'
