When he held my hand, I felt like my whole body was on fire.
The warmth started at my fingertips and traveled up my arm at lightning speed, whisking away any sort of disappointment or sadness from previous moments. It continued to flow into my cheeks, flooding them with a bright red color. It felt like a tingle down my throat into my stomach, creating butterflies that flew right back up in the form of a laugh. I loved the sensation, even if it only lasted a minute.
When he let go, it felt cold. I felt no butterflies, no heat. I became so addicted to the simple touch of his hand that I was a completely different person without it. I knew my mom noticed it. I definitely knew Trent noticed it, because of the hurt and disappointment I saw in his eyes whenever I lashed out at him.
But the funny thing was, Atticus didn't notice it. If he did, why didn't he say anything? Why couldn't he be attached to me like I was to him? Why didn't he seem as infatuated with me as I was with him? I didn't even take a look at myself. At what I had to offer.
And that was my greatest mistake.
He came to me on a Wednesday evening, wearing his trademark beanie and a frown. He looked so solemn, so serious. I was scared.
"Look, Paige. We need to talk."
He told me everything, but I heard nothing. Absolutely nothing.
"-My dad is being moved to New York for work... We're leaving next week-"
You never cared for me.
"-I'm really sorry. If I had a choice, you know I'd stay with you-"
Stop with the lies, Atticus.
"I love you, Paige. I always will-"
You're ripping my heart out. The one that was once filled with those stupid little butterflies.
"Goodbye, Paige..."
Goodbye, Atticus. I love you too.
