Dear Diary,
Hi, my name is Surprise. Ok, well it is actually, Susan Johnson, but my nickname is Surprise. Today is the first day of school in my new district. I will be in 7th grade at Hostentown Middle School. My dad had to move because of work. I am really excited to go, but at the same time I'm worried.
                                                                        Sincerely,
                                                                             Surprise
"Mom! Where is my pink hair bow?" Surprise called out to her mother. She needed to look perfect. It was her first day of school and she needed to make a good impression. She combed through her long, curly, blond hair.
"MOM!!" Surprise yelled again. The school bus would be here in twenty minutes and she needed to look perfect. Why wouldn't her her mom answer her? She fidgeted nervously. Her hair was still a mess. She thought about calling out again.
"M..."
"It's out here, Sweetie" her mom called back. Finally, she could do her hair.
Surprise ran out to the kitchen where her mother stood. As she looked around her, she noticed it wasn't there. Her mother sensing her distress, looked up from her cereal.
"It's over there," said her mom pointing to the hutch.
"Thanks," Surprise rushed out of her mouth as she ran back to the bathroom.
Only 19 minutes left...
Surprise grabbed the hairbrush and started to tie her hair back. She took the front section and pulled it behind her. It wouldn't stay. She would probably have to stay still for this, but it was too dang hard. Surprise took a few deep breaths. It would take longer to get it right if she didn't calm down. She took her now steadied hand a pulled her hair back. She carefully secured the section to a bobby pin. She repeated the procedure on the other side. Finally, she slipped the pink hair bow over where the two pieces of hair intersected. Perfect.
She turned around to inspect her outfit. She had on a hot pink shirt with a leather jacket over it. The shirt itself had three light blue balloons towards the top of it. Underneath them were the words, It's not a party until someone accidently pops all the balloons, in gray cursive. She had a new pair of skinny jeans on and was wearing a pair dark brown lace up boots.
She studied her reflection in the mirror. Something was wrong. She tried adjusting her shirt a bit. It didn't work. Then, she looked up at her face. She had forgotten to put on her make-up. She grabbed her pink-sparkly lip-gloss and rubbed across her lips. There, now it was perfect.
Surprise exited the bathroom with a smile on her face. She had beaten the clock. What time was it anyway? She glanced on the clock at the bottom of the screen of the local news station.
It was 6:45. She had 15 minutes left. She had over reacted. Alot.

Surprise jumped off the bus. She was finally at school. She was so happy until she realized she didn't know which way to go. She looked around franticly. Then, she saw some kids that looked about her age headed for the flag poll. Surprise, not knowing what to do followed them.
It lead her to a group of students. They were all hanging out together. She thought that was a little weird. Upon further inspection, however, they were separated into groups.
Surprise walked over to the group closest to her. There were three girls and one boy. The boy had a dark gray sweatshirt with the hood up. The shirt underneath it was a aqua blue color and was advertizing some organization. He had gray sweatpants and sneakers on. He was playing with an orange yo-yo and had more clipped to his pants. His hair was a reddish blond and was cut to have messy bangs across his forehead. He was short and a little overweight.
The girl next to him had brown shoulder length hair. She had a jean-jacket on. It went perfectly with her dark purple shirt and short gold colored necklace. She was wearing a short straight dark gray skirt. Her boots came up to her ankles and were dark green.
Another girl had light colored jeans on and black boots. Her hair was straight and blond. It came down a little past her shoulders. Her jacket was a aqua blue and had some black parts coming up the sides. I was styled to be for athletic use.
The final girl had short brown hair. She was also wearing a leather jacket. On top of her head, sat a light purple hat. She was wearing jeans that fit her tightly. Her look was completed with a pair of red converse shoes.
Surprise wasn't sure they looked too welcoming, but she went up to then anyway. They were the closest to her and perhaps they would be nice and help her out for a few days. Even if they rejected her, it would be better than her last school where everyone hated her.
"Hi!" exclaimed Surprise cheerfully.
The blond one made a face.
"Who are you?" she asked rudely.
Great first impression, thought Surprise.
"That was rude," said the boy.
Well, at least he pointed it out.
"Yeah well, shut up Andrew. Go hang out with the eighth graders."
Surprise tried not to act offended at the fact they were simply ignoring her for their own fight.
"Hey, I'm allowed to stand here," replied the boy, "besides, I'm just hanging out with my friend." He pointed to the one with the longer brown hair. The girl rolled her eyes.
"Stop it you two," she said as she glared at the two fighting. "Sorry, they hate each other. I haven't seen you around before."
"No we don't!" retorted the blond one. This just caused the other one to shake her head.
The other girl finally spoke up.
"Wow. Emily made a friend without us helping."
"Hey! I'm not that anti-social"
Surprise thought for a minute.  Should she reveal she was new? She new nothing about them except that the blond one and Andrew hated each other. She looked down at the ground. If she revealed she was new, they could shun her. Of course, they might help her too. They seemed nice enough. Sort-of. If these were going to be her new friends, she would have to make a good first impression.
She looked up. Emily was looking at her curiously. Andrew whispered something to her. The blond one scowled and the brown one tapped her fingers impatiently. Yeah, definitely a great group of kids.
"Oh yeah. You couldn't have seen me around before because I'm new. Today's my first day." responded Surprise in a cool-casual way. She did her best not to look on edge.
The blond one widened her eyes and look suspicious. She looked like she was about to speak, but the nice one cut her off.
"Oh. Well welcome to Hostentown Middle School. I'm Emily," she smiled warmly and pointed to the boy, "This is Andrew"
"Hi, I'm one grade ahead of them and not really in their group." He looked down and then looked at the blond one. "I just hang out here to annoy her and because Emily is friends with them."
The blond one looked angry, "Yeah, well you are stupid. I'm Serenity by the way. I was new just this year. The people here were really welcoming. Except for him."
They all turned to the last girl. Emily looked at her expectantly. Serenity glared at her. Andrew gave a soft ahem. The girl looked up surprised. She turned to look at Surprise. "Sorry, I was just thinking about... uh... stuff. I'm Aria."
Surprise was shocked. This group seemed at first unfriendly and unwelcoming and yet they were treating her kindly. At other schools, kids would do two extremes. They would either try to force her into a group where they were overly giggly  or shun her because she was new. She tried to not get her hopes up, but they would be great for the first day.
Emily spoke up. "Umm... We told you our names. What's yours?
Surprise smiled. They were asking her her name. "I'm Susan Johnson. My friends call me Surprise." Oh no, she had overstepped her bounds. They hadn't even asked her to be friends. She looked up embarrassed. That was it. She was bound to be alone here.
"Well then. Hi, Surprise!" Emily stated calmly. She then turned her head towards Surprise. "If you want, you can sit with us at lunch. Though, you should know," she stumbled over her words a little bit, " we are about at the bottom of the social ladder. Well except for Nik, or The Wind as we call him. If you hang out with us you have no chance of hanging out with the popular girls," She said the two last words with disgust. "Just to warn you."
Surprise held no value in social status. All she wanted was some friends. She was so happy that this girl invited her to lunch. She had no friends here and didn't want to sit alone. Her decision was easy.
"I would love to sit with you guys. Thank you."
Aria widened her eyes. She looked frantically at Emily, who responded by giving her a puzzled look. "Ohh... You are in 7th grade right?" Aria asked. Emily looked embarrassed. Her cheeks were slowly becoming tinted with a crimson color. Aria just looked back smugly.
Surprise wondered what what was so important about her being in 7th grade. Maybe they were prejudiced against 8th graders. That would explain their behavior around the boy.
"Uh yeah. Why?" she asked casually so they didn't know she was suspicious.
"Because the lunches are seperated by grade," answered Andrew. So they weren't prejudice.
Surprise noticed the others widening their eyes in fear. What did she do? She said something or did something wrong. They were going to hate her. She thought about it for a bit. They probably weren't scared of her, but there didn't seem to be anything else that could have caused their reaction.
"Uh guys what is it?" she questioned. They didn't answer her. What was the matter with them? Emily had shifted her gaze to the ground. Andrew put away the yo-yo he was playing with.
"Guys?" Surprise was starting to get concerned. Why were they acting like this? She saw Aria motion for her to turn around. Moving her feet cautiously, she slowly turned around.
"Ah," gasped Surprise. Right behind her their was an extremely tall man in an intimidating suit. He looked at the students cowering before him disapprovingly. He moved his eyes around until his gaze fell on her. He smiled menacingly.
"Well hello. You must be Susan Johnson. I'm Dr. Richardson, principal of our middle school. Come with me."
