"Honey, we won't be back for a while, ok?" My mother said, leaning in to kiss my cheek. I turned my head, my cheek rising a bit. I kept a steady gaze on the television, despite all the movement. "Yeah, yeah." I mumbled, not paying attention. Every Thursday was my parents 'Date Night.' They believed that it was an efficient way to stay involved with each other. I never thought much of it. It was my pizza night.
"Love you." My dad called from the other room. "Love you too." I shouted over the T.V. and the pounding rain outside. "Love you mom. Are you sure you want to go out tonight? The weather is really bad." I said, lowering the T.V. volume. She heaved a shaky sigh, tightening the scarf that was loose around her neck.
"Yes Dear. The restaurant is only three blocks away. You're dad is an excellent driver. I don't see why not." She picked up her purse from the ground beside the couch. "Love you Elowen. Be safe. No boys are allowed over, the usual rules." I chuckled, stretching my back out over the side of the couch. "Love you too."
I heard the back door open, a beep indicating so, and I grabbed the T.V. remote to raise the volume. I grabbed the nearest couch pillow, hugging it tight to myself. I could use a nap. My shoulders slumped as my grip on the pillow become less tight. I could always order the pizza later. Besides, I wasn't even that hungry. The pizza could wait.
The sound of the T.V. slowly faded away. Until I was awoken by a pounding on the front door. Not knocking, a pounding.
I put the pillow on the recliner as I made my way to the door. The pounding had now ceased, and there was only occasional light knocks. I looked through the peep hole to see two police officers. Police officers? One was sweating buckets, looking really uneasy, and the other looked fine. As I got closer I could faintly here their conversation. "No... I can't. You need to."
I unlocked the door, only opening it a crack. I don't remember doing anything illegal. "May we?" The officer that looked bored asked. "Of course." I said a little unsure, opening the door to let them come inside. He walked over to the couch, sitting down, the tan fabric sinking in greatly under his weight, as he put his rather wet umbrella on the ground next to the couch.
The younger officer, sill sweating buckets, came and sat right down next to him. "Scoot over boy." His mustache blew a little with his breath. A bead of sweat was on his brow, but he wiped it off with the back of his hand. I already didn't like this police officer. He looked as if he felt he was better than everyone.
Why were they here anyways? I didn't understand. I don't remember breaking he law. And why'd they come inside anyways? "Can I get you two anything to drink?" I asked, praying they'd say no. "No.. we won't be here long-" He was cut off by the younger of the two. "Water please." I stood there for a while before nodding and heading into the kitchen. Something didn't seem right.
"Would you like ice?" I asked, pretty sure that they could hear me over the loud thunder. "No thanks." I heard a barley audible reply. I quickly got out the water pitcher from the fridge, sloppily pouring some water into a glass. I wiped the granite counter tops with a napkin to soak up the water that I had sloshed around by accident.
I walked back into the living room, careful not to spill the water. The whispering had died down when I walked in my room. I handed the officer his glass of water was he drank it all in nearly a gulp. I moved the pillow from the recliner, looking at their name tags. "So, Officer Clayworth, and Officer Hughes, why are you here?" I mostly directed the question to Officer Clayworth, the burly man with the otter mustache.
"Well.." Officer Hughes started to answer my question. "Your parents got into a car crash, and-" "What do you mean? Are they ok? Where are they?" I questioned. Were they ok? "You're father didn't make it. He was killed on impact."
Numb. No feeling at all. I didn't know how to react. My father. dead? That's when reality hit me. Hard. I completely lost it. My chest started hurting, it felt like my heart was shrivelling up and dying. I fell to the ground. I was a big puddle of tears. I couldn't breathe. I was lost for words. "Your mother did make it though." I looked up, unable to see just about anything, the tears making my vision blurry.
The only noise in the house was my sobs being interrupted by huge breaths. "Can" sob. "I" sob. "S-see" sob. "He-er?" "Of course. We can drive you. You're in no position to drive." I didn't want to be in a car stuck with Fatty and Pit Stains over here. Especially Fatty. He didn't even look sorry when he told me my Dad was... gone. He was so inconsiderate. That snobby look permanently etched in his features.
I finally regained my balance and some strength. "No.. No." I whispered, walking over to the garage door, where the keys were hung on hooks hammered into the wall. "She's at The League- of Friends, just around the block." I turned towards them, my chest rising with my loud sobs. "Fine." I said, slumping my shoulders. Officer Hughes handed me the umbrella, and I nodded. "There are tissues in the car." He said, trying to cheer me up. Was he stupid?
I opened the umbrella, stepping outside and locking the door after the Officers. Clayworth opened the back seat door, allowing me to sit down. These police officers irritated me. I didn't know their first names, one smelled like sweat, and the other thought very highly of himself and his otter mustache. His badge was too shiny, and looked as if it'd blind someone who looked directly at it.
I wiped my nose with another tissue was the car stopped in front of the hospital. "Thanks." I sniffle, running outside. No umbrella. I didn't care anymore. I had to see my mother.
I tried to dry my face from the mix of salty tears and rain water once I was in the hospital at the front desk. "Edith Landreth" The lady didn't look up from her computer. "Are you a family member?" She asked. "I'm her daughter." I answered getting a little annoyed. "Floor 6, room F8." I didn't even bother saying thank you. I could barley speak anyways.
But I had to be strong. For my mother. Imagine if she sees me crying? She'll be worried. I don't want that. I try to flatten my hair and dry my face again with my shirt, before stopping in front of the door. There were some cousins that I faintly remember, and my aunt and uncle. My aunt walks up to me, and takes my hand away from the door knob.
"Elowen... you just missed her. She's gone." I looked back at her, unable to comprehend all of this. I was experiencing a pain too deep to describe, only to be felt inside. Where do I go from here? I'm not eighteen yet.
"You'll have to move in with us." My aunt looked at me with pure disgust. That's when everything finally settled. I sat against the wall, hugging my knees as close to myself as they could get. Why continue on with life? What was the point? What was life worth living for without happiness?
