chapter 2
This was the last thing Elodie expected to happen.
After school, she'd gone home to get ready for her surprise date with Harry. Beverly and Melanie were there to help Elodie find an outfit. They were also there to calm their friend when Harry called minutes later.
He'd cancelled their date.
“Something important came up,” he told her, no emotion whatsoever in his voice.
“I'm so sorry.” To Elodie, it didn't sound like he meant it at all.
“I promise I'll make it up to you.” He hung up, leaving Elodie with a lump in her throat and tears in her eyes.
She threw her phone against her bedroom wall, angry at Harry. It was supposed to be a special day. Why did he have to be the one to ruin it? It was kind of funny since he had been the most excited one about that afternoon. Then he was the one to cancel it.
“El, don't be upset,” Beverly said, brushing Elodie's hair back from her tear-stained face. “He's probably having problems at home right now.”
Melanie was picking up pieces of Elodie's shattered phone as she said, “That, or maybe there's some other serious shit going on. I've known Harry since he moved here from England and he's not the kind of guy to cancel on girls like that.”
“How would you know?” Elodie mumbled. Melanie tossed away what was left of the phone and sat down beside her friend.
“Because,” she sighed. “Harry dated one of my other friends before he met you. If he had an appointment on the day he had scheduled their date, he cancelled it just for her.”
Beverly glared at her cousin. “You know, you're not making Elodie feel any better.”
The two looked at their friend, who was staring at the floor with a heartbroken look on her face. She stood up from between the two girls and moved to stand by the window.
“You guys think he's gonna break up with me?”
Beverly's mouth fell open and she jumped up. “No! We doubt he would do that to you. Don't you know how much he likes you?”
“No. He wouldn't have done this to me if he did.”
Melanie slapped her forehead. “Elodie, stop thinking like that! Like Bev said, he probably has stuff going on at home right now and needs time. Harry would never hurt you like that. Trust me.”
Elodie stared out the window, biting her lip.
“Anyway, how about we go and watch a movie or something, yeah? I saw this cute skirt at the mall yesterday that would look great on you!”
Beverly's fake enthusiasm might have worked on Melanie, but Elodie was still wondering about Harry's sudden behavior.

Melanie held Elodie's hand as the two of them walked down the hallway at school the next day. Elodie was still upset about the day before and her friends understood her reason. They didn't hate Harry or anything, they were just a bit upset at him. Well, Beverly, Liam, and Elodie were. Melanie and Daniel weren't exactly taking sides because Harry was still their friend, too.
“He's not here today,” Daniel said, shaking his head as the two girls approached Elodie's locker. He gave Elodie a sympathetic smile.
Liam was standing beside Daniel and when he saw Elodie, his face brightened. He reached forward and pulled her into a hug.
“How are you?” he asked her.
Elodie shrugged. “Never better.”
“Hey, guys!” Beverly squealed, coming up to the group. “Guess what?”
Liam and Elodie had let go of each other, but he stood close to her. Daniel grinned at his girlfriend and took her hand in his. Bev smiled at him then turned to her friends.
“I have the most brilliant plan for this afternoon.” She paused and looked around for someone. “Wait, where's Harry?”
“He's not here today,” Melanie coughed.
Beverly looked surprised. “Mr. Perfect Attendance isn't in school?! Wow. I'm shocked.” She cleared her throat. “Anyway, I guess we'll have to fill Harry in later, but as I was saying, since we haven't done anything fun as a group in a while, why don't we all go ice skating or something after school?”
“Bev,” sighed Melanie. “you're the only one who wants to actually do something fun. The rest of us just want to go home and sleep.”
Liam chuckled. “Or we could just go see a movie.”
Elodie shook her head. “Dear God, don't say that. Bev took us to there yesterday and we did a horrible mistake of letting her choose the movie. I had nightmares last night!”
“What movie did you guys watch?” Daniel asked.
“Insidious 2.”
Liam nudged Elodie with his shoulder. “You are such a baby,” he teased. “I saw that movie. Wasn't scary at all.”
She narrowed her eyes at him. “Oh really?”
“Yes, really.”
Beverly cleared her throat loudly. “So are you guys in for skating?”
“Uh, sure, I guess,” Liam said shrugging.
Melanie rolled her eyes. “Fine.”
Daniel was obviously up for anything his girlfriend suggested. Elodie just nodded. Might as well since she didn't feel like staying inside not doing anything. She'd have to ask her dad when she saw him in the hallways.
As the group broke into more chatter, Elodie's opened her locker to put her stuff away. Inside, she found a note taped to her binder. Elodie picked it up, and read it.
Meet me at the park at 5:30 :) xx
-Harry
She crumpled it up and slammed the locker door shut.
