I left a note next to Emma to let her know that I'd gone and for her to tell the others. Then I'd walked out of her front door and had decided to make one last stop.
It's Sunday, so I know where to find him. I walk until I arrive at his church and am relieved to see that it hasn't started yet—I'll be able to see him one last time before I go.
He stands outside, leaning against the wall—I feel a pang of sadness as an image of Daemon comes to mind—and talking to people who I assume must be his friends. I begin to walk over to him when I see a girl with long hair run out in front of me and towards the group he's talking to.
When he sees her, a big smile spreads across his face. The girl runs up and hugs him and Mark hugs her back. They begin to talk to each other and they laugh, the blush on both of their faces clearly visible.
And, although a little part of me feels hurt, I somehow knew I would see something like this. And I can't help but be happy for him because, as long as he's happy, then I'll be happy, too.
I shoulder my backpack that Emma had given me to borrow and decide to send a farewell. I pull out Xander's knife, which had somehow brought the boy who leans against the building, back what seemed like forever ago, back. And I walk over to the parking lot and looks for the car that I know belongs to Mark's parents. When I find it, I set the knife in front of the front windshield of the car, and then I walk away.
I'm not there when the church service ends and Mark walks back to his car. I'm not there when Mark picks up the knife and looks around for me, because he knows that Liz had given the knife back to me when she'd entered her new home.
And I'm not there when, a few days later, everyone meets up at the tree house and Emma tells them what I've gone to do.
I walk through the forest towards the place where Angel was buried. I visit his grave first and set some flowers on it before I decide to go visit Daemon.
As I walk towards the place where Daemon is buried, I remember Emma, John, and Liz telling me about the rock walls and that they believe it was Peter, and I believe it was, too. And all I can think is that, even though he was a traitor, he came through in the end.
And then I leave the tree house and continue on my way to Daemon's grave before I leave the town to find the other two Elementalists.
No, three, I realize, because of Time.
Because of the girl who lost herself, but found herself in the end.
