Being a merman wasn't an easy task. In the supernatural world, mer-folk were treated with disdain. Most supernatural creatures tried their hardest to protect humans, but because of the way we had to stay alive we were cast away with the vampires.
Mer-Folk didn't have to drink human blood to stay alive like vampires. We had to drain their body completely of life in order to live, but we could only do so when they were experiencing positive emotions. Enough of a negative emotion would cause the mermaid or merman to go insane with thirst for positive energy and they would become a siren.
Sirens were destructive creatures that preyed on human's instincts for lust and love. They had hauntingly beautiful songs and they could lure any human towards them. If the human emitted a powerful enough positive emotion, they would stop singing and attack them, dragging them down into the watery depths of the sea and pulling their life energy straight out of them.
Although mer-people could survive for a while by eating fish, all mer-people had to drain a human once every two weeks or they would slowly start going mad from hunger.
As the Prince of Atlantis, I often tried to test my breaking points by starving myself. If I could find another way for us to eat less humans or to stop our need to eat them, my people would be better off. I was three weeks into my starvation and already I was feeling my stomach knot painfully as my body threatened to eat itself. Legend has it, that if a mermaid or merman were to go without any sustenance for too long, they would beach themselves and never regain their tail. Automatically becoming a human forever. I hadn't planned on ever going that far. Testing my limits was one thing, but losing my tail forever was another.
I was currently laying against the rock cliffs to look over the sea. My tail was nowhere to be seen when I was on dry land so I was free to look at the ocean for as long as I wanted. I swished my legs back and forth as I watched. There were some female humans splashing around on a small boat and the positive emotion they emitted was so powerful and as my stomach lurched, I found myself diving off of the cliffs.
I could feel my bones breaking and reshaping themselves to better accommodate my tail, and in a few moments, I was off. My tail was black and blue colored with gold flecks and my gills were laid flat against my neck and sides. If I needed to appear threatening, I could flare out my gills in a bubbling hiss. No sooner had a reached for one of the girls, that a ship came in between us. I don't know how I couldn't feel the ship coming, but with the hunger I was experiencing, I was positive I was in an almost trance. Angrily, I sped after the ship that had taken away my meal. My top speed was 260 mph and most mermaids and men topped out at 200 mph. Because I was of royal blood, I had more strength and a faster speed than the rest of my kind.
I easily caught up to the ship and stared at the man driving it. He was a young human with sandy blond hair and brown freckles splashed along the bridge of his nose and his cheeks. He had mint colored eyes and his aura oozed love and happiness. I couldn't control the hunger in me and I easily swam down as far as I could go without losing sight of the ship and then I swam as fast as I could back to the surface before jumping and trying to grab a hold of the top of the ship. I couldn't quite reach it though so I switched into plan B.
My song may not be as hauntingly beautiful as a Siren's, but it was good enough to get that captain to abandon ship. I swam ahead of the ship and crawled up the side of the rock cliff. My tail would be in full view from here, but nobody would ever believe the humans who would relay the story back to the proper authorities.  I opened my gills and let my song flow through me as loud as I could.

Oliver
I had promised the queen that I would deliver our goods to the merchants across the seas and return with treasures. Queen Elizabeth would surely reward me for my hard work and I was extremely excited. Just as I was turning the ship, I heard a beautiful song. It sounded lonely and sad. I found myself turning the ship in the direction of the voice. I quickly scanned the expanse of sea in front of me, but my eyes felt droopy. All of a sudden I heard a loud crash from the side of the ship and then loud blaring from the ship's sirens as we were told that our ship was quickly filling with water. My co-captain Owen rushed to tell me what was happening and that the crew was lowering the life boats. I nodded and told him to help me get as many spices as we could on the boats as well. He nodded and we both rushed to the back of the ship where the spices were held. But before I could grab anything, that melodious singing started again and I found myself walking towards the side of the ship. If I jumped off maybe I could find the voice.
I barely had time to register what I was doing before I jumped off of the ship. I heard my Co-Captain scream for me and then I felt cold arms wrap around me and bring me under the water fast. The melodious singing was continuing and I felt so weak. As if my energy was being drained from my body.
Out of nowhere the singing stopped along with my drained feeling and I heard a loud screeching hiss. My co-captain was in the water with me now. A spear trained on someone in front of him. My eyes slowly moved to see who he was attacking and I was surprised to see a beautiful man with flared gills and a gorgeous tail. His tail reminded me of a blue monarch butterfly. God, he was gorgeous merman. Mermaids were the stuff of legend and there was beautiful one right in front of us. Why was Owen attacking this creature? He was so beautiful.
The merman hissed and I watched as bubbles formed near his frilled gills. He used his tail to push Owen away and then grabbed me and took off at the speed of a torpedo. He eventually stopped and I was surprised to see a small little island. I coughed and choked as we came on to dry land until I was kicked over onto my back. The merman was looking at me angrily and I couldn't help but feel attracted to his beauty.

"Look at what you have made me do." He seethed in anger. "Your stupid little friend has made my life difficult." He was pacing back and forth on his strong legs and I bit my lip as naughty thoughts invaded my mind.

"You're so beautiful." I whispered in awe. His eyes immediately snapped up to meet mine and he snarled at me. My, what beautifully sharp teeth you have. I internally winced at the razor like canines he had and instead focused on his eyes. They were lilac purple with flecks of gold in them.

"Stop staring at me like that, human." He gritted out. I just stared back at him boldly.

"May I see your tail again?" He stopped pacing and looked at me incredulously.

"I tried to kill you and instead of being afraid, you want to see my tail like a child?" I thought about it for a moment. He was trying to kill me? Well if I were to die, I'd want to see his beautiful tail one last time. I nodded my head at him and he sighed before planting his feet in the water. I heard the snapping and shifting of bones and I watched him grit his teeth to keep from crying out from the pain of having his bones broken apart and moved. His tail was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. I crawled toward him and rubbed my hand down his tail. It felt slimy.

"If you're going to kill me, you can do it now." He stared at me confused so I continued, "I have no way of getting back to my ship or to my queen so you can kill me." He just shook his head at me before shrugging and wrapping his hands around my neck. I panicked and struggled and I felt him letting me go and whimpering weakly. He was slumped over next to me, panting weakly. Had I hurt him?

"I'm sorry if I hurt you." I whispered. He seemed to be extremely dazed and confused and he let out a weak humming sound. I heard a loud screeching sound from the water and saw two angry looking mermaids coming toward us. One male and one female. Oh god, he had called backup.
