Chapter 1
Light flooded through the sheer curtains and filled every space of the dim room as the sun peaked over the horizon. I groaned and rolled over to face the opposing wall. After a few moments of silence muffled by my feather pillow I was vaguely aware of someone knocking at my door. I wearily sat up and grunted in my dreary state. The knock came again, louder this time. "what?" I demanded. The voice on the other side of the door was Rosa our maid. "Miss Rey, your mother requests for you down stairs in half an hour. She says its important family business." I sighed for my parents, everything was important and business related. From how many people my father wanted at his party down to what color my mom should paint her nails. I swung my feet out of bed and onto the cold hardwood floor. There was no comfy carpet to warm my feet. No pictures strung up on my walls, no fairy light above my bed. My mom said all of it was clutter and threw it away when I was ten, now my room is grey and sad, like my life. And as depressing as it sounds its true. My life was pretty bland. I woke up went to school played soccer came home and studied. On the weekends I would go out with my boyfriend, probably to a movie or dinner. That was it, my life, I could almost write it in one sentence.
I wrapped my arms around myself and shivered. The air con was at 60, who had turned it down to 60? I quickly showered and slipped on my outfit for the day, jean shorts and a t shirt, wow original. As soon as I stepped outside my door I could smell the aroma of bacon and eggs wafting from downstairs. Did I mention Rosa was our cook too? Downstairs my parents were both sitting at the table hand in hand. Ok. Something was up. If today had been any normal Sunday morning My dad would have been dressed in his suit, coffee in hand ready to burst out the door with Rosa nipping at his heels reminding him to eat his veggies. Yes, my dad worked on Sundays. My mom would have been sitting at the table curlers in her hair reading a book and sipping freshly squeezed orange juice. And for me, well, I would have still been asleep.
