At 4:30 a.m., Royal Implement was still, except for a radio that someone had left on the night before, tuned to an AM news station.
Someone unlocked the shop door. As it opened, the radio was playing an interview with a local Christian-studies professor. "And it is this that destroyed us. Religion acts as a membrane between the known and unknown. This membrane is the fabric of our society. It is religion's utility. If something punctured the membrane, the unknown would rush in. We'll see how humanity deals with that. Now look—I think when the deadline comes, we'll do an admirable job of attempting to find certainty in this rush of blackness. That's human nature. This level of moral consciousness makes us unique. The problem is that we can't understand, much less accept, an unknown answer. This difficulty is what brought us to the concept of religion in the first place!
"God is the grail we seek with which the unknown becomes known. When God is unknown, he is the gate that keeps the two separated. If God shows himself to us before we're ready to comprehend him, we lose him. We lose everything. We searched for clarity to our unknown threat by examining the voice—questioning its validity. In this way, the voice became God. What happens next—"
Benny turned the radio off, took a sip of coffee, and turned on the shop lights.
