I woke up to the sound of Sam from across the small room.

"Turn your damn phone off. It's been ringing for five minutes and it's not helping my spinning headache either."

I picked my phone up off the bedside table. My mom was calling. Why was she calling? I put it up to my ear and sat up on my bed. I glanced at the clock that read 8:30. It was much too early for this, every time my mother called it was an hour long conversation. Not to say I don't like talking to my mom when she calls, I do. It's just that I don't necessarily have the time for it.

"Hi mom." I yawned into the speaker.

"Jess honey, I called you three times why didn't you pick up?"

"Mom, I was sleeping and didn't even hear it. I only got a little bit of sleep last night. So what's up?"

"We're coming to see you today! Your father and I thought it would be a good idea before the semester started up and what not. We would've called sooner but I wanted it to be sort of a surprise. We're on our way right now so we should be there in about an hour and a half as long as there's no traffic." This was a surprise.

"Alright I guess we could go walk around and I can show you guys the campus. When you get here there's a little coffee shop by where you have to park. I can meet you guys there. Text me when you guys are about ten minutes out. Sound good?"

"Sounds like a plan. I'll let you go get ready since Heaven knows how long that'll take. I love you sweetheart"

"I love you too Jess." My dad could be heard in the background. My face held a small smile.

"Love you guys. I'll see you when you get here." With that I hung up the phone.

I let out a deep breathe and laid back on the mattress. "Sam, my parents are visiting today." I looked over to her with her face in her pillow.

"Shhhhhhhhh. Your voice makes the room spin. Let's use our indoor voices." I laughed at her attitude.

"Well maybe you should've thought about how you'd feel today before you got wasted last night. I don't even remember you coming in last night." She sat up and groaned.

"I don't remember coming in either honestly. Oh my god, I'm never drinking again."

"Relax and take an aspirin. You'll be fine in a little while. Make sure you drink some water too." I had stood up and walked across the room to my desk and grabbed two of the small pills from the bottle.

I handed them to her. "Thanks bud what would I do without you?" she swallowed them with her water.

"I have no idea. Now I have to get ready to go see my folks. What should I wear?" I was more so asking myself rather than my hung over roomie. I walked to my dresser and got out a pair of ripped jeans and my favorite long sleeve top.

After I got dressed I went to my mirror hung on the wall. I didn't have a skinny stick body whatsoever. I had curves and I was fine with them. Of course no one is completely happy with their body, we all have things we wish we could change and sometimes I was insecure with my appearance but others I was confident. My clothes fit nicely around me and I felt good.

Some light conversation was held between Sam and I as I applied my makeup. I usually keep my face routine simple, something Sam always nags me about. There have been numerous times where she begged me to do it for me before we were going out. With my concealer on I applied my eye shadow and some light mascara. I took one final look in the mirror and went to get my shoes. I put my white sneakers on and looked at the clock which now read 9:15. I had another forty five minutes till they got here.

I decided to go early and get something to eat while I waited. I said goodbye to Sam as I shut the door. As I stepped out of our building, I noticed how chilled the air was. It was actually quite refreshing. I took small strides in the direction of the coffee shop. As I got there I opened the door and the aroma of fresh coffee and doughnuts hit my nose. The smell was amazing.

I ordered a small raspberry tea and a doughnut with sprinkles. With my food in hand, I sat at a small table near the window. The sky was grey and cloudy but not a single drop of rain hit the ground. This was my favorite weather as it was comfortable and quite cozy. I sat at my table for around fifteen minutes scrolling through my phone when I got a text from my dad saying they were five minutes away. I text back giving them directions to the shop.

"Jess!" I turned around. My parents stood at the door.

"Hey guys I missed you." I put my phone down and walked over. My dad engulfed me in a hug followed by my mom.

"This is such a cute little place. Did you already order something?" My mom looked over to the menu hanging above the counter.

"Yeah I got here a little early. You guys can get something. I don't really have plans today so we can take our time."

We walked up to the cashier who had previously taken my order and they got coffee. Once they had paid and gotten their drinks we exited the small building. I wasn't really sure what to show them as we walked along the pathway.

We talked about small things mostly. It was just nice to have my parents around since I haven't been home in a while. It was like I hadn't seen them in a million years.

"Your grandmother made me promise to tell you she misses you and to come home soon. She's doing really well at the moment, living that party animal life, going to bingo every Thursday." My dad let out a soft chuckle, he always thought he was so hilarious.

"I need to call her soon. I keep forgetting. I really miss her too." My grandma Rose was the sweetest person you'd ever meet. Not one person could ever dislike that woman.

"I'm planning on coming home for Thanksgiving this year, I want to see everyone."

We walked on a bit more. It was already 3. My Dad began talking. "So are there any boys you're seeing? Anyone I need to have a little chat with?" I shook my head.

"Nope, nobody at the moment Dad. Don't worry." He let out a dramatized sigh.

"Alright good. Well we're going to get heading back. It's a pretty far drive home. You get back to your dorm and get to your college duties. We love you."

We said goodbye and I promised I'd call them tomorrow. I walked along the paved pathway as I reached into my purse for my phone. I couldn't find it. I checked my back pocket, not there either. I left it at the coffee shop. Dammit. I walked hurriedly in the direction of the shop. No idea what would happen once I got there.
