Chapter One
The Butcher
The Butcher stands outside Wendy Baker's house, preparing to start the massacre that will follow. The first kill is the one that The Butcher has been planning for a month. Wendy is or rather was, simply just an acquaintance of someone that the Butcher wanted to target. He decides it's time. He picks up the phone and calls Wendy, using the voice changer. "Hello?" Wendy says. "Hello Wendy," the Butcher replies, "What are you doing right now?" Wendy shivers, looking out her window, letting the Butcher get a view of her. "You're a pretty one, aren't you?" asks the Butcher. "Who is this asshole?" Wendy shouts into her phone. The Butcher tells her "You'll see who I am soon enough", and hangs up the phone.
The Butcher walks around the house to the back door, knocking on the window, then walking to the front door and slipping in the house. Wendy checks the patio, thinking the Butcher is still outside. He slips behind her while she closes and locks the door. She turns around, to face the Butcher, as he thrusts his blade once. Twice. Three times. She loses count as she loses consciousness. The Butcher stands above her, admiring his first kill.
Chris
Chris Forrester rolls out of bed, getting dressed for the day of school ahead of him. He stretches, looking in the mirror. Chris notices how much he's grown since freshman year. At 17 he was now standing at six foot, his build slowly coming along. Chris's door is flung open as his sister yells at him that their mom is driving them in five. "Get out of my room!" yells Chris. Sam has always gotten on his nerves. Growing up because she was the baby, she always received more attention from their mother. Sam gives Chris a dirty look and says, "You don't always have to be an asshole" as she closes the door. Chris grabs a shirt, gives it the smell check and tosses it. He finds a clean shirt and rushes down to catch a ride with his mother to school. Chris thinks about his mother and how much she's done for the two of them since their father died. His step-dad had helped them a lot too. Frank, his step-dad, was a teacher at the Whitewood Secondary. He taught Chris and his friends in first-period history. Chris quickly rushes the thoughts out of his head, takes a deep breath, and gets in the car.
"Have a good day, I love you guys," Gabby Forrester said. Chris rolls his eyes and hops out, as Sam kisses their mom on the cheek. Chris and Sam go separate ways, as he sees his friend Jasper Powell walking from his car. Chris shouts, "Jasper! Hold up." He catches his friend, who turns around with a huge smile on his face. "Hey buddy, how was your weekend?" Jasper asks. Chris shrugs, "same old same old."
Jasper and Chris have been friends since they were ten and have always been close. Jasper was a little shorter than Chris but was more muscular. Jasper's phone rings, "Hold on it's Rosie." Rosie was Jaspers girlfriend, who was also best friends with Sarah, Chris's girlfriend. Rosie was a cute little girl, with a feisty attitude. Sarah was a gorgeous, innocent looking girl, who always had a smile on her face. They had actually moved out and gotten an apartment together. Jasper quickly says, "Hey babe where are you guys? Meet us at Chris's locker," and hangs up.
On the way to Chris's locker, they walk past Amy Reid and Ryan Clarke. Chris waves at Amy and smiles, Amy smiles back. Chris wonders for a second why he and Amy don't talk anymore and realizes he's missed her this summer. Amy and Chris were childhood friends, but when Sarah came along, Amy just disappeared. He even really thought he liked Amy for a second before Sarah started talking to him. Chris pushes the thought from his mind, as he sees his girlfriend walking down the hall towards him. Sarah kisses him, "Hey handsome," Chris replies "Hey beautiful." "Ugh get a room you two," says Jasper as he picks Rosie off the ground kissing her. Chris rolls his eyes, "and WE are the ones who need a room?" "All four of you should get a room for fuck sakes," says a familiar voice. Chris turns around with a smile, greeting Oliver Clements. "Oli, don't sneak up on us like that," says Rosie. Oliver smiles his trademark grin. Oli was his nickname, and everyone knew who Oli was. Oli was captain of the football team and the quarterback, and one of the biggest assholes when he wanted to be. Last year, one of his wide receivers missed a game-winning throw; in return, Oli fucked his sister and never called her again. Chris and Oli hug, being close friends since freshman year. Jasper Chris and Oli were like the three amigos, they spent all of high school together. The bell rings over top of their reunion, reminding them about their first period classes. The group goes their separate ways, making lunch plans for that day.
Carter
The first day back in Whitewood in 14 years and Sheriff Carter Cane was already reminded of the event that made him leave everything and everyone he grew up with. Knowing what he did now, he regretted moving back and bringing his daughter Hannah with him. Standing outside Wendy Baker's house Carter is approached by two deputies. The male introduces himself as Martinez, the female is Peggy. Carter doesn't really pay attention as they describe the scene. He opens the door and walks inside. He walks to the back door, where the medical examiner is taking photos. "Carter Cane and you are?" he asks. The medical examiner looks up and smiles at him, "Hi I'm Dustin Loomis but you can call me Dusty". Carter crouches down to examine the body of Wendy Baker. "Cause of death?" Carter asks. Dusty replies, "Multiple stab wounds. Six entrance wounds to be exact." "Who would do this to a kid?" Carter said with a sigh.
Amy
Mr. Murphy's history class was extremely boring, till Amy felt her phone go off. She checks it to see a text from her friend. She reads it; it's a link to a news article on Wendy's death. "Oh my god," Amy gasps, "Wendy Baker was murdered last night." The class erupts, as Mr. Murphy tries to keep the class quiet but eventually, walks over to Chris and asks him what's going on. Chris turns to the class and reads off his phone, "Wendy Baker, 17, was found dead in her house today, in what appears to be a break and enter gone wrong. The cause of death was multiple stab wounds." Chris's face goes white as he reads the last part. Amy notices and asks if he's okay, he just nods in silence and turns back around. "Alright class, I'm going to let you guys leave for lunch early, but I want all of you to report to your next class," Mr. Murphy says. The class rushes to leave.
Amy is walking down the hall when she feels a hand on her shoulder. "Boo," says her best friend Ryan, with a grin on his face. "Jesus Ryan you scared me," she said. Ryan had been Amy's friend since Amy and Chris went through their teenage drama. She was into Chris, then Sarah and Chris started dating. Amy couldn't stand the two for a long time. Eventually, she got over it. Maybe she had become friends with Ryan because she found him attractive, and he was a shy guy. She laughs as the thought enters her mind, Ryan giving her a quizzical look. The two walk to the cafeteria and find a table to sit at. A few minutes later a tall skinny boy and a brunette girl wearing a leather jacket walk over. "Hey, I'm sorry. There's not a whole lot of places to sit, can we join you?" asks the boy. Amy nods, the boy introduces himself as Mike and the girl is Hannah. "I haven't seen either of you around school last year, are you guys new?" asks Ryan. Hannah nods "yeah, the new sheriff is my dad, we just moved here yesterday." "Not me, I've been here since freshman year, but I'm not very social," says Mike. The four continue to eat their lunch, talking about classes they have this year, and events they would become involved in.
Sam
Sam had a fourth-period gym with her best friend Matt Clements. Matt was Oli's younger brother, who had become friends with Sam around the same time as Oli and Chris. Sam and Matt were attached at the hip, always together when given the chance. Sam and Matt were part of the schools reporting program, a special class designed to help kids get into reporting careers. Matt was her camera and tech guy, she was the writer and face. She wondered when they would finally find a story worth telling.
Chris
Chris got home later that night and was doing homework when he got a call "Hello Chris," the voice says. Chris replies skeptically, "Hey who's this?" "It doesn't matter who I am, it matters who you are," the voice says "and that's someone that doesn't have the slightest idea of what's about to happen to them." Chris starts to worry, "what's about to happen to me?" The voice laughs, "nothing yet, but soon." The phone hangs up. Chris thinks about what the voice said. Could it be? Could there be?No, he thinks. It's impossible. Not again.
Gabby
Gabby sat downstairs, after hearing what had happened to Wendy from Frank and Chris. She was glad that she wasn't the reporter dealing with the murder, as she thinks about what happened in 2001. Gabby goes to the closet, reaches from the top shelf, and pulls down a shoebox. She opens it, revealing notes, newspaper clippings, and a knife. She picks one of the clippings and reads it. "Last weekend, Duncan "The Butcher" White was shot and killed after murdering nine people over the weekend. He was found, after his final victim, Mark Forrester was shot in the head and police arrived on the scene from an anonymous tip. White was shot and killed at the carnival grounds after a confrontation with police." Gabby sighs and thinks to herself that they only know what they're supposed to.
