I stood in the middle of the hall with my gaze glued to the TV screen posted with the latest news. The preparatory school was big and haughty with it's money making sure to have to top technology such as it's numerous TV's and computers throughout the school. It was proud to be known as the number one private school in the country... Almost as proud as it was to have Superman on their PTO.
Being the daughter of such a power couple as Lois Kent (or mostly known by her maiden name of Lois Lane) and Clark Kent wasn't all it was cracked up to be. Everyone wanted to know me because of my parents. I always had so much pressure as to whether I'd be a lead reported like my mother or develop superhuman powers like my father. Neither seemed to come to pass seeing as I was currently failing my English class and gym class for lack of strength. Everyone wanted me to be just like my parents when I wasn't even sure who I wanted to be.
"Superman seems to have just flown into a thirty-two story building that has caught on fire to try and keep it from collapsing as people try to escape. It's been fifteen minutes since that time and he is still yet to be seen. This is channel nine reporting the news and we will keep you updated on whats to come. Now this is Chief Hodge of the Metropolis Fire Department with us to tell us more of the stability of this building..."
"Come on Dad..." I whispered to myself not realizing that a few others had gathered.
"It's ok Len, you're dad always makes it through." My best friend Ellie told me as she gripped tightly to my hand in reassurance. I nodded slightly knowing she was right but still every time my heart jumped to my throat in knowing there was a chance he might not make it home this time
"I know, I just-"
I was cut off. "Oh stop your whining Kent." A boy snarled and I pulled my eyes away from the screen to see who it was. "Who cares if he makes it out. He's an alien anyways. Not even one of our kind." He stepped closer to me and I took a step towards him, feeling my defenses rising.
Ellie gripped my hand even tighter to try and keep me stationary. I wasn't big for my age of thirteen and I certainly wasn't threatening in appearance but even though I had my own issues with my parents, they were still my parents and when others talked badly about them when they do everything in their own power to protect this world, even it sometimes means neglecting their daughter, it ticked me off to no end.
"How could you say such things when my dad is risking his own life?" I asked him curtly.
He scoffed at me and stepped closer to be face to face with me. "That doesn't make him any less of an alien, and quite frankly, I'm not sure what that makes you? And your mom? well she might as well be one of them the way she betrayed humankind to be with that thing and make you." He spat out.
My blood was boiling and it took everything to turn away when Ellie pushed me down the other way of the hall. "Shut-up Frank, You're just jealous because your dad is in sales and her's actually saves lives."
We had only made it a few feet away when the news reporter came back on the screen. "And there he is ladies and gentlemen! Once again Superman saves the day! From reporter to modern day hero, we couldn't ask for more! This is Lana Kane with Channel Nine news..."
"It's a pity, I say let him burn." Frank told one of his friends.
Instantly I yanked my arm from Ellie's grasp. She sighed. "Here we go again..."
....
"What on earth were you thinking Lenora Jane Kent?" My principal sternly asked as she stood leaning forward firmly behind her desk. Her eyes were like flames and I could feel her anger radiating off of her. I knew I was in for it big. "Hitting another student on school grounds? Again? You can't continue to get in fights and expect that there won't be repercussions for it!" She motioned to the black eye the was forming on my face and the ice pack that I held to my lip.
