I slept like a rock. I had been so overwhelmed with my own emotions and everything that had occurred the day before that as soon as my head hit the pillow, I was out.
Now it was only a few hours later and for some reason I was being shaken awake.
"Hmm?" I mumbled.
"Get up len, We're going somewhere."
"Dad?" I blinked a couple of times until the face in front of me was clear. "What time is it?"
"Early, now come on." His voice was smooth but held an air of confident authority that I didn't dare defy.
Quickly I dressed and made my way out into the hall where my dad leaned up against the wall waiting. He was tall and when I stood beside him I had to crane my neck up to look at his eyes. "Ready?" He asked with a small grin tucked in the corners of his eyes. I nodded without words, "Good now stay quiet, your mother is still asleep."
"Does mom know we're leaving? I have school today I don't think-"
"No she doesn't and would you quiet down? If she wakes up then that means you actually have to go to school." He pointed out and I knew I should stop arguing. Never was I above turning down a reason to ditch school.
After we made it downstairs and out to the beaten down truck that for some reason my dad insisted on keeping, we drove for a long time before stopping at the a dead end road with not a house in sight. Swiftly my dad got out of the truck and closed the door with the window still opened. He leaned in. "You coming?" It was the first time since at the house that we had spoken. The whole ride I either dozed on and off or contemplated what I could say to my dad after my actions the day before.
I hopped out of the truck and rounded to where he stood. Suddenly a jacket went flying towards me, knocking my glasses crooked. "Oomph!" I pulled the jacket from my face and looked at him with a dead-pan expression. "Seriously?"
"You'll want to put that on." His expression was that of amusement while I stood completely annoyed as I shrugged on the heavy duty jacket. "Alright, You ready?"
"Ready for what?" I questioned suspiciously. The sun had just began to rise and his smile only grew. Before I knew it, he was picking me up bridal style.
"Hold on tight." My eyes went wide and up we went. Instantly my breath was taken from me as the wind rushed all around me. I shut my eyes tight and hugged myself tight to my dad for fear I was going to plummet to the earth at any moment.
I deep rumble erupted in his chest and his laughter surfaced. "You're alright Lenny, I've got you. I won't let anything happen to you, you can open your eyes. Besides, you won't want to miss this view."
I was trembling with fear of the unknown and slowly opened my eyes. I tightened my grip even more, and it was a good thing he was made of steel or else I would have been suffocating him with my grip of iron. He was right though and I could feel myself relaxing at the sight of the sun breaking through the clouds that we hovered above. I was astonished at the beauty and it wasn't long before I could feel the warmth of the sun hit my face. I closed my eyes to soak it in and felt better than I had ever felt before. Like all my worries had washed away.
When I opened my eyes my dad was staring as we hovered in place. I smiled the biggest smile I had ever had in my life before resting my head on his shoulder in comfort. Never had I felt so close to my dad before, as if in that single moment we bonded more than we ever could with our feet planted to the earth.
He had never taken me flying before due to my mothers insistence that I was too young and it was far too dangerous. When I was little I would beg and beg for him to fly me to the moon only for his deep laugh to erupt and he'd tell me he was worried we would miss and land on the stars instead.
