We lived 30 minutes out of the city and each day I'd either take my bike home or my Aunt Lucy would pick me and Ellie up. Considering she didn't have detention like I did, which was a miracle seeing as she practically lived in detention with me, she took the bus home. I waited on the curb after detention and winced as I tested out my swollen eye.
The car entered into view and I hurriedly got in and faced the window hoping she wouldn't notice the blue bruise and busted lip.
"Hey kiddo, someone's eager to leave school... could it be because of the detention once again?" Her chastisement was sarcastic but light. "Woah." She said and turned my face towards her. "Who did this to you?"
"It doesn't matter Aunt Lou, can we just hurry and get home before mom and dad do?" I asked her panicked by how I would explain this.
"Who did this Len?"
"Why does it matter? I started it so it wasn't their fault!" I told her in a squeaky voice.
"So I can go kick their ass is why!" She spouted off and tried to get out of the car before I pulled her back down and leaned over to close her door.
"Trust me Aunt Lou, they look a lot worse off than I do. There's been enough ass-kicking for the day."
"Don't say ass." She told me and we both broke off into laughter. After a few moments of laughter she did one more once over of me. "Nicely done... Gah you're just like me its terrifying."
She was right, ever since I was little I had been called her mini-me. Everything we did mimicked the other. She always understood where I was coming from and how to help the most.
"Aunt Lou... How do you suppose I tell my parents about this one. They don't exactly know I've been in fights at school and this is the first time I've actually come out of it with bruises. "
"Ohh no, this is all you kid. I'm not getting you out of this one. And besides how would they not know you've been in fights before? Doesn't your school have to report to them or something?" She glanced over at me for a second before turning her sights back to the road. She was grilling me just as she would one of her clients. She always did make a good lawyer for her ability to weed out the truth.
"Well they usually have to do parent teacher meetings but your parents actually have to go to the meetings to know whats going on with your kid."
"So if they don't go to the meetings what happens?" She asked and I could tell she was getting frustrated. There had always been bad blood between Lucy and Lois, but once I came along they decided to put away their differences on account of trying to keep some stability around. Often my aunt would get frustrated at my parents when their life balancing act didn't quite work well.
"They usually send home letters." I grimaced at where this was leading.
"And they never read the letters?" Her tone of voice changed.
"Well they have to be given the letters to actually be able to read them..."
"LENORA!" She gasped. "What have you been doing with them?"
I jumped at her screech, "I usually just have Ellie sign them. She's good at it really..." It went silent for a while and I could feel my guilt rising. "Aunt Lou?"
"Don't Aunt Lou me and try to sucker me into helping you out this time. Not even with those big brown puppy dog eyes.. or should I say eye?" She narrowed her eyes at me, "You did this to yourself."
I groaned loudly and sat back in my seat, anticipating my doom the rest of the ride home.
