Chapter 7: It Really is a Christmas Miracle
The doors hit against the wall with the sudden force.
I covered my mouth in surprise, shocked that I had forgotten. I mean, this was the most important part of my week. And I had totally forgotten.
I had to tutor Jack.
He had a big smile on his face, practically jumping out of his seat in anticipation. I chuckled to myself. Even when he does have a disability that weighs him down, he always manages to have a smile on his face.
He waved at me rapidly. "Hey Matt! I'm ready!"
My chuckle turned into a laugh. In between breaths I replied, "You always are Jack."
He was simply a joy to tutor, no matter who he was. Sean could be a burden at some points, although. He was always very cynical, as if he knew something I didn't.
I walked up to the younger boy, taking a seat at the small table. I carefully moved the textbooks from next to Jack, taking a seat next to him.
"So, have you've been studying?" I asked expectantly, looking at all the papers strewn across the small surface.
"Totally!" He screamed. "Mark's been helping me!"
I uncovered my ears, not even noticing that I had done that in the first place. "Oh really? Do I hear a ship sailing?"
Jack's laugh rung through the empty and barren cafeteria. I small tint had formed on his cheeks, contrasting nicely against his pale skin. "Not yet!"
"You already hang out with him enough," I replied truthfully. "Might as well make it official!"
The blush grew, a small smile on he boy's face. "Yeah, maybe."
Silence washed over the room, a lingering awkwardness still left over from the personal subject we'd just dove into.
I could see Jack fiddling with a piece of paper, green and red colored messily on it. He seemed to be examining it but was careful not to open the small note.
I didn't ask anymore questions, it would just make this situation more awkward. I turned my attention back to the thousands of papers and packets thrown around the table, even some on the floor.
I carefully removed some old worksheets to reveal a small Biology textbook. I know this was Jack's least favorite subject but we had to get better at it.
I patted the back of the small child, gray jumpsuit rough against my hand. I carefully moved my hand up to his florescent green hair, failing to get his attention with the first gesture.
I smiled playfully, messing up his hair, causing Jack to swat my hand away and chuckle, looking up with a huge smile and bright eyes that seemed to give the room a festive feeling.
"Okay," I said seriously, still keeping a smile handing the textbook to Jack. "Let's begin!"
Jack groaned in protest, eyes dulling and smile dissipating. He looked back at me, the playful smile turning into a charismatic smirk. "Trying to get us to do science, eh?"
"I tutor Jack, Sean, not you."
"Oh, but we are the same people," He retorted, the smirk growing bigger. "So we have an offer."
"I don't have time for this."
"We have plenty of time."
"I do, you don't."
Sean's smirk disappeared, turning into a intimidating glare. "True, so what do we get out of this."
"Knowledge and so many facts you could make a book."
