When I woke up I didn't want to open my eyes, knowing that I would still be in my room. Slowly I peered through my eyelashes and was stunned by what I saw. Instead of seeing the normal dirty white color of my bare pale walls, I see all different shades of green and blue. I bolted upright to get a good look at my surroundings.
I realized that I was sitting on the ground, still in my pajamas from last night, surrounded by all different kinds of trees, vines, and bushes. In the distance, I could hear the sound of waves lapping on the beach.
Before I could completely comprehend what was going on. An arrow embedded itself into the tree only a foot away from my head. Screams and chant started coming from the trees around me.
I sat frozen in fear, wondering what was going on. Soon enough, I was surrounded by... boys?
Boys of all ages with all different weapons were standing in a circle around me. Their weapons all pointed at me. The boys were all wearing dirty clothes with patches sewn on them. "Hey, boy! What's your name?!" One of the oldest looking boys, with a hood over his head, yelled.
Timidly I answered. "J-James... But some people ca-call me Jem."
The boy grins a wolfish smile As he tilts his head to the side ever so slightly. Making him look even more intimidating than he already was. "Come with us. Pan's gonna want to meet you." One of the boys behind me pokes me with the tip of their spear, encouraging me to stand up and start walking. The entire time we were walking none of the boys, except the oldest one that had spoken to me, lowered their weapons. I felt as if I was some kind of animal to them that they were trying to corral
After walking for a few minutes we came up to a camp of sorts. There were little huts made of mud and grass with even more boys wandering around doing what seemed to be chores. After we got to what seemed like the middle of the camp, the oldest boy -who I now figured was the one in charge- turned to look at me after dismissing the other boy and said, "Now don't even try to run away. You're in Pan's territory now... Well, actually this whole island is Pan's so..." He snickered to himself after he said the second part as if it was somehow funny to him. After that he turns back around, saying over his shoulder in a now completely serious tone, "Follow me."
I had to practically jog just to keep up with his long, fast strides. We walk until we come up to a huge tree house, but by then I was panting and could feel myself start to sweat because of the humid forest air. I put my hands on my knees and took a second to catch my breath. As I did this I looked around at all of my surroundings.
We were at the outsides of the camp and if I looked up high enough I could see what looked like a cloud of smoke somewhere deeper in the forest. The tree in front of me was about three feet wide and only God knows how tall with a huge dome made of dark wood sitting high up in the air. There were many different attachments that went off the main building and one to other large trees around it. There only seemed to be one way up, and that was an old rickety rope ladder that hung down the side of the tree.
The boy gestured for me to climb the rope ladder. I took a deep breath before grabbing the old wood of the ladder. As we climb I decided to ask a question that had been bugging me for the past few minutes. "So um... Who's this Pan guy?" I ask.
The boy chuckle. "You'll find out soon enough."
I sigh as I started to get extremely annoyed. "Well, would you at least tell me where I am?"
"Pan will answer any questions you have, as long as you don't piss 'em off." He said, as a matter of fact, reaching up and hitting the back of my foot trying to get me to hurry up but only really succeeding in making me lose my balance for a second and causing me to cling to the rope for dear life.
After I steadied myself, I looked down to glare at the boy which just seemed to make him chuckle and continue to push me up. When we finally reach the entrance of the tree house, it's was trap door made out of dark wood - just like the rest of the house- with a golden handle. I push the door open and climb inside. Instead of following me inside the by just tells me to wait in this room and that he was going back down to tend to the other boys.
I look around the room and the first thing I notice is the huge shelves that line the walls and are over filling with books. In the middle of the room were a soft looking couch, four different color bean bag chairs, and lots of fluffy pillows scattered everywhere. There was a pair of french doors on the other side of the room that lead out to a beautiful balcony. I walk around the room, running my fingers along all the covers of the books, reading all their titles. As I got to the middle of the room a book caught my eye.
Peter Pan.
I squint my eyes and tilt my head as I step closer to the book, I pick it up and examine it. It looked old and extremely used. The spin is coming loss and pages are yellowed. The front cover is an old drawn on picture of what looks like a boy in a baggy green shirt with green skinny jean looking things, and a bow and arrows strapped to his back.
"Have you read it?" Asked a voice behind me, that causes me to jump.
I spin around to find a girl about a head shorter than me. She had dark strawberry blonde hair that was cut short, like a boy's. Her eyes were bright green, and there were freckles decorating her, round, sweet looking face; she was wearing a baggy green shirt that had other green patches sewn on it with a brown leather belt with a sword attached to it that loosely hung around her hips, her pants were dark green, ripped and patched up pair of skinny jeans that were tucked into a pair of dark brown, mud covered, laced up combat boot that stopped just under her knees.
"Um... What?" I asked stupidly.
She laughed lightly, as she rolled her eyes, and put her hands on her hips. "I said, have you ever read that book?" She repeated.
"Uh, yeah. Well, the newer version. I've never seen one this old." I said looking back down at the book.
"Yeah, most people have never read this version of the story." She almost sounds sad when she says this. "Anyway, Jem! How are you!?"
I stand there with my mouth agape. How did she know my name? "You must have a lot of questions, right? Well, let me answer one I know you've probably been wondering, and that's 'Whos this Pan person?' right? Well, no need to look any further because you have found the one! The only! Pan! Or you may know me better as. Peter Pan!" She smiles a huge grin that made the corners of her eyes crinkle and the dimples on her cheeks show.
I stare at her for a minute before saying the first thing that comes to my mine. "Peter Pan's a guy," I state
Her smile falls and she crosses her arms over her chest, "Really? Because I'm pretty sure I'm a girl, but if you want I can go get my birth certificate and show you." She said sassily, and for a split second, she reminded me of an old friend, though I quickly dismissed the thought.
I raise my hands as if I was surrendering. "S-sorry it's just that in all the books and movies, you a boy."
She shrugs. "It's the hair." She says simply "Really Jem, I would have expected you to be more open-minded." She said as a smirk formed on her face.
I nod slowly, not quite sure how to take that last part, she was acting like she knew me. So instead I begin to look around the room again. "So what is this place?" I asked.
"A library." She once again said sarcastically.
I shot her a glare but couldn't help but to smile too. "You know that's not what I meant."
She laughs and lightly pushes my arm as if we're great friends. "I know, I was just teasing you." She then grabs my hand. "We..." She pushes herself off the ground as if she's jumping but she doesn't land, instead, she stayed floating in midair, "are in..." She then sprinkles this glitter looking stuff on me and pulls me up into the air with her, "NEVERLAND!" she cheers.
We fly out of the balcony, with her still holding my hand to help me. Now I know that to most people this would all be wired to most people but it felt as if I had been here before like all this was second nature to me.
As we glide through the sky I looked down and see the group of boys from before. Peter saw me looking at them and says "Those are the lost boy!" she yelled so I could hear her over the wind.
My smile grows wider when we cross over the beautiful land. She steers us towards a waterfall and we go right through the middle. We land in a cave and Peter turns to me and holds both of my hands. She seemed so happy at that moment that I couldn't help but to grin like an idiot. "You can live here if you wish. You will never grow old, never have to stop playing and most importantly, you will never feel unloved ever again." She said, biting her lip as kindness and what also looked like nervousness filled her green eyes.
"How did you kno-" She cuts me off.
"You wished on my star, remember?" A bright smile returning to her face as she said this.
"Oh yeah..." I say to myself before looking back at her. "Um...Yeah..Yeah, I'd love to stay!" I said, getting excited. She squeals and throws her arms around my shoulders and hugs me tightly. I smile and hug her back.
"You're gonna love it here." She pulls back and looks me in the eyes. "You're special Jem. And because you came here on your own free will... Well...You're going to save us all."
