When I came downstairs from unpacking my things in my room, which was on the second floor, the whole family was sitting in the living room. A little dark skinned boy came running out and looked at me before screaming and running back into the room. The whole room went quiet as they all turned to look at me. I heard my brother coming down the stairs behind me and felt him stand just behind me. His hand went to my shoulder and he gave it a little squeeze. He walked in to the room with me following him.

Sophie stood up from one of the couches and picked up the little boy who was pointing at us and screeching.  I felt like I should tell him to shut the hell up but as I didn’t want to be rude so I made no sound. I stared at the floor while Sophie tried to calm the child. ”Loco shhh, its OK their friends.... shhhh I know” soon her attempts started to work and Loco became quiet, while I awaited the awkward introduction like every home and every life.

”Emily and Taylor, this is my husband Freddie and my daughters Tabby and Sam” she pointed to each one as she introduced us. Freddie was a tall basketball player type. He looked like he could hold his own. He had black hair and laugh line around his eye in a way he looked a lot like his wife, a kind face but he had a family vibe to him. You could tell that he was a family man and that if it was between work and family it would always be family that he would chose. Tabby had her father’s black hair but she looked a lot like her mom. She wore clothing that looked more comfortable then slutty and she had no makeup on. She was my height but wore heel so she looked taller. Sam was wearing similar clothing, only hers was a bit more slutty. Sam had hair like her mother but had her father’s nose.

”These are my sons John and Loco.” The boy sitting on the couch finally looked up, the others had been sizing us up, judging us since we entered but he was much like his mother. He wanted us to be comfortable before he was on top of us.

John was the spitting image of his father, only he was taller - six foot two I would say if I had to guess. He wore shorts even thought it was cold outside. He wore a shirt with his school name on it and it said J.WATER CAPTAIN SWIM QUAD. He looked like a swimmer to me.

I had never learned to swim; it was something that only my brother knew. I used to get very uncomfortable around water so I never learned. I watched Taylor swim alot and hung by the pool with him but I had never gotten in. The idea of swimming just made me squirm.

Loco was now on the floo,r straight out staring at us. He was the odd one in the family. They all looked alike except him. There were all white and he wasn’t, I wouldn’t call him black because he was too light for that but I would say one of his parents must have been mixed race, or both. His eyes were dark brown and he had on a bright green top that said I’M WITH THE BIG GUY, it made me laugh which was rare and my brother looked at me with wide eyes which held unreadable emotions.

We probably looked really out of place in their home. We were tall and tan whereas they looked like they hid from the light. We had scars all over us whereas their skin was as smooth as a babies. Their hands looked as if they had never been used whereas you could still see the mark for whatever fight we had been in last. Sophie said they wouldn’t be told our story; we could tell them if we wanted or we could start again.

These people were not like the rest of the world that we had grown up living with, they looked welcoming yet they looked like they protected their own. I was wondering if that included us.  When the little boy spoke, he was the first in the family to talk to us except Sophie, and he seemed sweet.

“Can I sit next to him at dinner?” he asked, pointing at my brother. I laughed looking at my brother’s face, still emotionless.  I knew I should look that way too, but it was harder when I was with people that seemed nice. Sophie laughed and said yes then called the family meeting into order.

My brother and I sat on the floor next to one of the couches waiting to hear what Sophie had to say. She looked at us then the empty couch and ignored whatever questions she wanted to ask, continuing on with her speech “ok so welcome to the house you will get ground rules later but first I have to tell you all something super exiting, horrible timing but exiting all the same. Your Father and I are going to a work thing in the city for a week so we need you guy to show Emily and Taylor the ropes and get them enrolled in school. I already called the school, they just need to turn up and sign some papework and then they're good to go. We leave in the morning first thing..”  That was a shock. Not only did this woman we hardly knew bring us into a small town in the middle of nowhere, but now she was leaving us all alone in a house full of strangers. “Sure mom, we’ll do it don’t worry. I’ll take care of them,” Sam said. She seemed unbothered that she was getting stuck with us.

Sophie turned to us and looked down at us, “I really am sorry, I wanted so much to take you to your first day of school here but when I get back, we will go shopping get you new clothes and anything you need for school. Right now just rely on the others. Emily, you can use the twins' clothing, it should fit you; and Taylor you can use John's, it might be a little small but it's only for this week.” She looked really sad; we both nodded knowing there was nothing we could do. “OK with that done. Lunch will be in an hour,” she quickly left the room and heading towards the kitchen.

The rest of the family got up Freddie ushered them out of the room and looked over his shoulder as if forgetting that we had nothing to do. “I don’t know if you want to come and play, but we usually play a game of basket ball before Lunch, if you want to play you can” he said looking back at us.
