PRELUDE

Astrae leaned against a wall, crouching down in the shadows. Her fingers shook as she wiped the crimson blood off of her jaw. She promised herself she would never give into her vampire half, yet here she was. A young girl lay dead in front of her. Astrae could tell from her childish features that she was about 13. She had killed a 13 year old girl. A shudder ran up her spine as she took a deep breath and stood up. She couldn’t stay here. She had to leave as soon as possible.

Her house wasn’t far. The shadows of the night hid her as she hurried around the corner to a warehouse where she was squatting. Rule number one, Don’t feed by the house. When Astrae arrived home, she went into autopilot. Clothes were thrown out of drawers and into her duffel.  She quickly stripped off her clothes and slipped on a pair of black jeans and a black lace top, her bra showing through. She wasn’t too concerned at the moment though, as she heard sirens already. It was time to go. She reached under the counter and grabbed an envelope that was taped underneath. In it was at least three thousand dollars. Sliding on a pair of comfortable boots, she tied her hair up and left her home. It was nice while it lasted, but she knew she wasn’t going to stay long. She tried not to stay in the same place long. Even when she fed as a succubus, it was hard for her to leave the humans alive. She could, but she almost always did kill them.
