Jake meets me at the beach around three in the afternoon. He’s got his surfboard tucked under his arm and he’s already shirtless and in swim trunks. “Jenna, you’re not in your bathing suit,” he whines.

“Quit bitching,” I snap, which makes him laugh. I strip off my shirt so I’m wearing my bikini top that has a superman symbol on it and my shorts that match. I look over as Tony walks over to us with Emma and Zoey beside him.

“Hey guys,” Tony says.

I roll my eyes. “I thought this was a day to hangout not a day to bring your booty calls with you.”

Emma gasps and Zoey glares at me.

“Can you please play nice for one day?” Tony says.

“Probably not. Where did you even meet these girls?”

“They’re new to town and I ran into them. Are you going surfing?”

I watch as Zoey strips off her shirt to reveal her Batman bikini top which matches her shorts. We’re both wearing superheroes? No, that can’t be right. I keep my eyes locked on her until she looks up at me and raises an eyebrow, but then she looks down and realizes why I’m staring.

“Hello? Earth to Jenna; are you going surfing?” Tony asks.

“Yeah man, leave me alone.”

“Come on Jake.” They both take off running into the ocean, leaving me alone with Emma and Zoey.

“You two are matching!” Emma squeals.

“I know,” Zoey replies.

“She’s batman and I’m superman, actually,” I say.

“You’re both superheroes though.”

“Yeah.”

“Hey, are you dating any of them?”

“No, fuck!” I throw my hands up and walk over to my towel that’s laid on the sand and plop down. I ignore her horrified stare as she runs off into the ocean with the guys. I raise my eyebrow when Zoey sits beside me on her towel. “Can I help you?”

“Why are you so weird?”

“Excuse me?”

“Like, one minute you’re pretty cool, but the next you’re insanely angry.”

“I don’t like people asking me the same question and that’s twice I’ve been asked if I’m dating them in the past two days.”

“Oh.”

“I’m sorry; did I upset your friend?”

“She’s not really my friend. We were together when we met Tony, so we’ve just kind of stuck together. But we only knew each other for like a day before we met him and now it’s like a package deal.”

“Well those boys are my package deal, so get your own.”

“For someone who isn’t dating them, you’re protective over them.”

“No, I’m just saying you can’t just waltz your way in here and take my friends away from me.”

“I’m not trying too.”

“What about you? One second you’re completely sassy and the next you’re so nice you disgust me.”

“I have no reason to be mean to you. Well, I kind of do, but you seem… cool I guess.”

“Cool?”

“Yeah.” She drops the subject and so do I, because I have no interest in getting inside this girl’s head. I’m not good at making friends, especially with girls and that’s why I hang out with two boys all the time.
