This morning when I woke up, I was exhausted. Annie, the girl that came over last night, had stayed long after I agreed to give Aden a shot. She had told me about herself and made it clear that she is happy Aden found his mate and that she will find her's soon. She hopes. We talked about anything and everything. I told her everything about my past and why I'm on the run and plan on leaving soon if Aden doesn't take me. She said that if anything happens and Aden doesn't protect me, then she will. She said to think of her as a guardian angel.
"Pierre? Earth to Pierre?" Mandy waves a hand in front of my face. I snap my head in the direction of her voice.
"Oh shit. Sorry. I kinda went to space there for a moment."
Mandy giggles and waves her hand dismissively. "No problem. Just don't plan on doing that again because you have a line of customers." I look back over the counter to see a line of angry or amused people. I apologize to the front lady and she just laughs it off. That's a relief.
Before I know it, I had helped all the guests. I turn away from the till and look over at Xavier. He is standing in front of the coffee machine making a cup of dark roast. I lean against the counter and admire the way he moves without flaw. But my admiration is short lived before he turns around and smirks at me, "Like what you see, Chica?"
"Nah, I've seen better." I admit the truth. Aden is way better. His smirk falters but doesn't completely disappear. The bell that hangs above the door rings and I turn around ready to help the next customer. Aden walks over to a table in the corner of the cafe. I was told earlier that we have to go to Aden and he doesn't come to us. Like a king.
I sashay to his table and stand as he talks to a guy sitting across from him. I clear my throat and wait for him to look at me. The guy sitting across from him turns and looks at me with a smirk. "Hey, How you doin'?" He leans against the table and winks in my direction. Aden growls. Wanting to get more of Aden's attention I flirt back. Giggling, I flutter my eyelashes and lick my lips, "I'm quite fine... Can I getcha' anything?" I never look towards Aden as I take his friends order. Aden's growling gets louder and louder overtime and as I'm about to walk away, he snaps.
"What about me? You are my mate! You only flirt with me! And you never talk to another man without my permission!" he roars and stands. He grasps my wrists with a tight grip. Sparks fly up my arm and through my shoulder.
My wolf purrs as he shows dominance. But my conscience gets angry. He has no right to tell me who I can and can't talk to! And now he finally admits I'm his mate. "Oh. So now I'm you're mate? Yesterday I was just a house maid to you! What is going on?" I yank my wrists away from his grip and hunch my body in defensive position.
His eyes fade from their chocolate brown to pitch black. I gasp and a hand fly's to my mouth. The only other time I've seen eyes like this is when my father was about to drive an silver knife through my heart, but my mother had stopped him. She said I had needed more time. My body shakes and tears burn my eyes.
"You are mine." Aden bellows once more. His eyes go back to the normal brown and his heaving breaths slow down. He must've seen the scared look in my eyes for he calms himself down and wraps his arms around my shoulders. If he lets go, I don't think I can hold myself up. "Are you okay?"
I open my mouth to tell him "no" but nothing comes out. The traitorous tears fall and he is cooing sweet nothings in my ear. His friend stands and looks me in the eyes. After a moment or two of his intense soul-searching, he looks at Aden. "Dude, whats wrong with her?"
"I don't know." he turns his attention back to me. "What's wrong?"
I gulp, "My father... he used to... hurt me. His eyes would t- turn black and he would...." I break into a series of sobs and my knees give. I fall to the hardwood floor. Aden's eyes grow dark.
"What? He hurt you?" he growls and and gets to the floor to cradle me. I nod, not trusting my voice. Aden scowls and whispers something that sounded like latin. All of a sudden, I feel everything. I feel everyone's eyes burning a hole into my back. I feel Aden's arms wrapped around my waist and his cotton shirt against my face. I sob even harder when I realize that this is only the mate bond. Aden doesn't actually want to comfort me. I push on his chest softly, slowly pushing him away from me. The warmth that his body provided slowly disperses.
I stand. "I'm sorry." I brush feign dirt off of my apron.
When I get back to the counter, Xavier looks at me the same way Aden's friend looked at me, with the same soul searching eyes. "Who are you?"
"I'm the alpha's mate."
