Violets POV
Elijah sat with me in the living room and we both waited for somebody else to walk through the door. He made hours feel like minutes because we had endless things to talk about together. We talked about poetry, and the things that the two of us both liked to write. We talked about how he loved to dance but refused to show me because of his humbleness. We talked about the music that each of us loved. He made this place feel slightly less intimidating and a bit more normal. When I first check the clock it was around 8pm and when I turned to check it again I was shocked to see that it was a quarter to midnight.
I turned to look at Elijah to see that he was looking at the clock to. "Do you think we're the only people..like this?" I asked looking at him. "With our abilities I mean."
He turned to look at me. "I'm not sure, there isn't really a way to tell." His smile went away. "From what Jones told me, it took him years to even find us."
I wasn't comprehending what Elijah told me. It was odd to think that somebody was searching for me because of an ability I tried to hide. It was odd to think that what I was capable of wasn't such a bad thing as I thought. I looked at Elijah and the door clicked open. Not one, but two people walked in. Elijah looked at me and smiled. "Looks like we aren't the only ones."
The girl that walked in was skeptic of the area. She looked at us then looked at the staircase. "I'm Lyla." She said. She walked farther into the house, into the room next to the room that we were in.
The boy that walked in after Lyla looked at us. He was staring for quite awhile before he actually began talking. "I'm Henry." He said putting his hand on his chest. "So I guess we're all here for being...weird." He said laughing.
Me and Elijah looked at each other and laughed with Henry. Lyla came back and looked at us. She looked at us all and we saw her crack a smile. "I guess that is why we're here." Elijah said standing up and putting his hand out to shake Henry's hand. I stood up to do the same with Lyla.
Both of them shook our hands and smiled. Elijah awkwardly stepped back. Henry took this as a chance to talk again. "So like, what can you guys do?" All of us stood quiet and looked at one another. None of us wanted to go first. "So I guess that means the I go first?" All of us laughed quietly. By the time I opened my eyes against and looked up from laughing there wasn't only one Henry, but three. Each talked more than the last. It was an incredible thing to see. It seemed to be one of the things that you would only see in comic books. Wishing the blink of an eye all three Henry's all merged back into one. He started to laugh then looked at the three of us. "Who's next?"
"I have to take you outside." Elijah opened the door to the backyard and all of us followed him. The pool was steaming and me and Lyla both seemed to be amazed by that. Elijah closed his eyes and took a deep breath in. We looked at him, anticipating what he was going to do. "I need you to step back." He cracked his neck and we all stepped onto the stair that led back into the house but still watched him. He cleared his throat and pressed his fist onto the concrete floor. The pool waved and water piled onto the grass next to the other end of the pool. He lifted his hand and the concrete was cracked open.
"Dude, how did you do that." Henry said as he laughed. I stood back and Lyla stood with me.
"I absorbed the nights energy." Elijah said quietly. "Can we go back inside? I should sit down?" Me and Lyla were the first ones to go inside and the boys followed.
Before anybody could say who would go next in showing what they were able to do, I decided that I would to get it over with. I closed my eyes and focused my energy on the chandelier above us. My head ached and I could see the lights twitching on and off through my eyelids. Henry lightened the mood by the sounds he constantly made out of amazement. After a few ooh's and ash's the light bulbs began to break. I heard Lyla because it startled her and that's when I opened my eyes. The light in the room was dimmer because of the broken bulbs.
"He's coming." Lyla whispered, and a few seconds later the door opened and Jones walked in.
Elijah walked up behind me and whispered. "Echolocation." He was referring to Lyla.
Jones sat in the chair that I was in hours before and began talking to us. "Don't get to comfortable with there being so much space here." He began. "There are more of you coming." Each of us took a seat on the couches that were next to the chair that he was in. "I want you guys to get used to each other, and building off of each other's skills. You're going to need it in the long run." His eyes scanned us. He smiled. "We're gonna train." He closed his eyes. "We're gonna train long, and hard. You guys are going to reach your full potentials before you leave this place or you are going to die trying." The four of us looked at each other, alarmed as the thought of dying replayed in each of our heads. "You'll each have your own personal challenge that you have to defeat. There is a challenge at each stage of training. And once you finish training you might ask?" His smile grew wider. "Then you're faced with the biggest challenge out of them all." He stood up and pressed his hands together. He walked towards the door and all of us watched and he grabbed the doorknob. He turned back before he opened the door and made eye contact with each one of us. "I look forward to working with you."
The door closed and Elijah was the first to speak up. "Challenges? Dying? I never volunteered to be here, I have a life to live still." He grew angrier and I felt Lyla grow tense. "This is...honestly..stupid.." Elijah threw a cup that was on the table and it shattered. Lyla flinched and the whole room went dark.
"Nobody is dying!" She said. "You guys need to be proud of the abilities that you are given. We are special." She said standing up. "I was never proud of my abilities..my father wasn't either. Do you think it was easy to be beaten whenever I used my power?" Her voice grew louder. "I can sense danger before I'm ever faced with it!" She looked at each of us. "I can talk to the dead!" Her voice was shaking. "That isn't something that I should be ashamed of, it's something that I should embrace. Something I can use for the better. But instead I was stuck smiling with a mouth full of blood because I hid to bite back all of the things that I know I could do." Tears ran down her face. "Nobody is leaving. Nobody is dying. We are here to do something better. We are here to achieve." Once she was finished talking she began to walk up the stairs.
Henry and Elijah were looking at each other. They both had grim faces and jumped when the door upstairs shut. "I'll see you guys at training tomorrow."
They nodded and I walked upstairs, back to the door with my name engraved on it. Back to the door where I'd be spending most of my nights behind. This was where I was meant to be.
