Chapter Three

A doorbell rang out from downstairs. I almost screamed, startled out of my thoughts. I quickly took a few deep breaths and smoothed down my hair, wanting to look collected for whoever was at the door.

“Coming!” I called out, wiping the last tears out of my eyes and jogging downstairs.

The doorbell began to ring repeatedly and I took a shaky breath. It could have been anyone. A classmate, a neighbour, a really late trick-or-treater, or even someone they had something to do with my mother’s disappearance.

I shook myself and slowly opened the door, expecting whoever it was to jump me and kill me in one quick movement. But instead, I gasped and threw open the door, surprised to find a shivering Lucan standing on my porch.

“Lucan? What are you doing here?” I asked, walking outside in my socked feet and closing the front door behind me.

He just stared at me, his deep green eyes seeming to bore into my soul. I began to grow uncomfortable, and shifted my weight between my feet. I knew I had to be careful about how I acted; I couldn’t let anyone find out what happened to my mom before I found out more.

“Cardin,” Lucan rasped and stepped closer to me.

I held my breath and refrained from backing away. I really was into Lucan, but now was not the time for any of that. My mother was a much more pressing topic.

“Lucan, why are you here?” I sighed, crossing my arms.

He continued staring at me. I took a deep breath and stared back at him until, after a few seconds, he broke the look.

“I’m here because of Amber,” he replied, blowing air out of his mouth.

“Wh-What happened?” I almost squealed, and although it should have been the least of my worries, I couldn’t help but hope they had broken up.

“She’s gone.”

What happened to innocent little Amber? OH NO!
