Chapter 2

The next day at school, the air was filled with excitement.  As soon as Laura and I stepped into the school, we knew something was different.  Everyone was excitedly whispering about something, and giving each other curious looks.  It seemed suspenseful.

“What’s going on?”  I whispered to Laura who was also looking around in confusion.

“I don’t know, but I intend to find out.”  She walked over to a girl from our class and started talking to her.  She came back a few minutes later with a grin on her face.

“It’s Senior Prank day.  The football team got together last night and have a prank prepared for today.  No one knows what it is but the rumor is that it’s going to be pretty messy so everyone’s kind of nervous.”

“How come we didn’t know about this?”  I asked frowning.  We were usually the first ones to know about this kind of stuff, especially since we where the seniors here.

“Probably because of the dress shopping yesterday.”  Laura said shrugging.  “We have been kind of busy lately.  But it better not be too dirty, I’m wearing new jeans today and I will kill the whole football team if they get my jeans dirty.”  I laughed and dragged Laura to our first class of the day.

Throughout the whole day, everyone was on edge.  Even the teachers had realized something big was going to happen today and they also seemed pretty nervous.  The football team was the only ones that seemed at ease.  But they wouldn’t tell anyone what was going to happen.  I even asked Matt, who was a close friend of mine on the team but he wouldn’t say a word.

“Come, on Matt!”  I said as I walked with him to our last class of the day.  The nervousness was killing me.  All day nothing had happened, and now it was the last class of the day and still nothing!  “Please, tell me so I can be prepared.”

“Sorry, Lena, but I am sworn to secrecy.  I can’t say anything.  But I will tell you to be ready for anything and listen when the text comes.”  He winked at me and sat down at the Chemistry lab table as we entered the class.

I sighed, but sat down beside him.  Ms. Knarls, the Chemistry teacher, was sitting at her desk glaring at everyone.  No one ever really liked her; she was too strict and demanding.  I looked at the table behind mine at Laura and she sent me a wink.  Did she know something about the prank already?  I wouldn’t put it past her; she always seemed to find out everything.

The lesson drowned on and on, but no one seemed to be paying attention.  I looked outside the glass door that was at the corner of the room.  From that door, you could see easily into the woods that surrounded the school.  I was so zoned out staring outside, that when my phone vibrated in my pocket, I was jolted back.  I discreetly pulled my phone out and read the message on the screen.

To all seniors:  Run outside as soon as you hear the alarm!

I sat there staring at the message in confusion.  What alarm was it talking about?  I looked around the classroom and realized everyone had gotten the same message because they were staring in confusion at each other.  We realized two seconds later what was happening.

The fire alarm went off sending everyone crazy.  There was commotion everywhere as students ran around the classroom.  But when the sprinklers went off sending whipped cream everywhere, they realized that this was the prank they had anxiously been waiting all day for.  Everyone was laughing now, and cowering under the tables to escape the whipped cream that was flying around.  It wasn’t until Matt pulled the glass door open and yelled at everyone to run, that we remembered the text message.  No one had to be told twice to skip school, they were running outside immediately.  Ms. Knarls was screaming at everyone to stay seated but no one was listening.

Laura grabbed my hand and pulled me outside with the rest of our class into the woods.  Everyone was outside running from the teachers.  I couldn’t believe this was happening.  We were going to be in so much trouble once we were found.

“This was so much better than last year’s prank!”  Laura screamed.  “I don’t even care that my jeans are dirty.”

“A warning would still have been nice.  I mean we’re going to be in so much trouble once the teachers find us.  We might even get detention!”

Laura pulled me further into the woods.  “Come on, Lena!  Stop worrying too much!  Live a little.  Let’s go find where everyone went off too.”

We couldn’t find anyone.  Everyone had gotten separated in the woods.  I saw a blur of blue before I realized who it was.

“Matt!”  I yelled.  Sure enough Matt turned around and grinned at Laura and I.

“There you guys are!  I was looking for you two.  So how did you like the prank?”

“Amazing!”  Laura cried.  “I would still have liked to know about it though.”

Matt looked around, and his eyes widened, “Crap, we gotta get out of here; Ms. Knarls is right behind us!”  He grabbed my arm and started pulling me away, further into the woods.  I grabbed onto Laura’s arm and we both ran with Matt.

“We are going to be in so much trouble!”  I said trying to keep pace with Matt.   “Maybe we should stop.”

“We can’t stop now!  Ms. Knarls will kill us!”  Laura said.  So we continued running until I could barley breathe anymore.  It was while I was being pulled along that I tripped over a tree root and spiraled down the hill.  I hit my head against a tree trunk, and my vision swam out of focus.

“Oh my god, Lena, are you okay?”  Laura cried, kneeling beside me.  I couldn’t say a word because my head was throbbing so much I was afraid I’d throw up as soon as I opened my mouth.

“I think she has a concussion.”  Matt said from beside Laura.  “You can go if you don’t want to get caught, but I think I should stay here until Ms. Knarls gets here and take her to a hospital.  I mean it’s kind of my fault.”

“No way!  I’m staying with Lena.”  Laura said.  I could feel her fingers on my forehead.  “Lena, are you okay?”

“My head hurts.”  I groaned out in pain.  I don’t know how long we were there before I heard footsteps once more.

“What happened?  Is she okay?  This is your entire kids fault; I can’t believe you would do such a thing like this.  Wait till your parents here about this.”  Ms. Knarle’s voice came from my other side.  “Well Matt, what are you waiting for?  Pick her up, the hospitals right behind the school, we can walk there, it’s not far at all.”

I could feel Matt pick me up and start walking.  I kept coming in and out of consciousness until Matt would shake me to make me stay awake.  We got to the hospital soon.  I could hear Ms. Knarls banging on the door.

“Why in the world are the hospital doors locked?  What is wrong with these people to lock the door?  Can’t they say there’s an emergency here?”  Ms. Knarls voice broke through my consciousness again as the banging continued.  The door finally opened and I heard a deep voice.

“What seems to be the problem here?”

“She fell while she was running and hit her head, it may be a concussion.”  I heard Matt answer.

“Here, I’ll take her, you can leave.”  I felt someone else’s arms around me, picking me up.  Then I heard Ms. Knarls tell Matt to go back to the school and wait for the others while she stayed with me.

“Ma’am, you don’t have to stay here.”  The deep voice said once more.

“Nonsense, of course I have to stay, I’m Lena’s teacher, and she is my responsibility till her parents arrive.”  Ms. Knarls answered.  I felt the guy walk as he carried me somewhere.  Then I felt something sharp sting my arm.  The last thing I saw before everything disappeared was a pair of dark blue gray eyes.  As soon as I saw those eyes, I knew something was wrong, and my life would never be the same.
