That night, you met up with John at the entrance of the skyscraper, CAM Global News. The two of you enter the place and see a TV screen broadcasting the company's news channel, which is showing a breaking news story about an arrest of MP John Garvie.
You and John walk through the revolving doors and approach the security barriers which need an electronic keycard to open them. "Magnussen's office is on the top floor, just below his private flat, but there are fourteen levels of security between us and him, two of which aren't even legal in this country. Want to know how we're going to break in?" Sherlock asked as he approaches you and John.
"Is that what we're doing?" You asked, pretending to be annoyed at him.
"Of course it's what we're doing." Sherlock said and walks away.
Later you and the boys are walking towards an escalator and get on it as Sherlock speaks. "Magnussen's private lift. It goes straight to his penthouse and office. Only he uses it and only his key card calls the lift. Anyone else even tries, security is automatically informed. Standard key card for the building. Nicked it yesterday. Only gets us as far as the canteen." Sherlock said as you three get to the top and walk towards the lift and he holds out the card.
"If I was to use this card on that lift now, what happens?" Sherlock asked you and John.
"The alarms would go off and you'd be dragged away by security." You said.
"Exactly." said Sherlock.
"Get taken to a small room somewhere and your head kicked in." John said as you try to hold back a laugh. Sherlock looks around at you two and asked. "Do we really need so much color?"
"It passes the time." John remarked. Sherlock gives him a look then pulls out his phone and said. "But if I do this...." And he presses the card against his phone. "If you press a key card against your mobile phone for long enough, it corrupts the magnetic strip. The card stops working. It's a common problem--never put your key card with your phone.....What happens if I use the card now?" He asked.
"It still doesn't work." John replied.
"But it doesn't read as the wrong card now. It registers as corrupted." You said and Sherlock nods at you and asked. "But if it's corrupted, how do they know it's not Magnussen? Would they risk dragging him off?"
"Probably not." You and John said.
"So what do they do? What do they have to do?" Sherlock asked.
"Check if it's him or not." You stated and, once again, Sherlock nods at you.
"There's a camera at eye height to he right of the door. A live picture of the card user is relayed directly to Magnussen's personal staff in his office--the only people trusted to make a positive ID at this hour, almost certainly his PA." Sherlock said.
"S-so how's that help us?" John asked him.
"Human error. I've been shopping." Sherlock replied as he pats his breast pocket and makes his way to the lift.
"Here we go then." Sherlock whispered as he reaches to the lift doors, you and John following him, and presses the card to the reader. John turns to you and asked, in a whisper. "He does realize he doesn't look like Magnussen."
"Which, in this case, is a considerable advantage." Sherlock whispered to him, barely moved his lips.
"Sherlock, you complete loon! What are you doing?!" You hear Janine's voice ask over the intercom. Sherlock smiles widely into the camera while John looks around in surprise.
"Hang on--was that....? That.....!" John stammered as he steps closer to Sherlock, who holds up the flat of his hand to him to stop him as he talks into the camera.
