Chapter 6
Emilie’s life had changed but her love for nature remained. She often went to the park, with her brother of course, because with her mom around she would have never been allowed. For her eighteenth birthday a few months before, after lots of begging, her mom had agreed that at some point she could take a walk alone. It was more satisfying than she imagined and she had decided on the perfect day.
On a bright morning in April with spring in the air, she woke up all bright and cheery. The birds as if they could sense the happiness that bubbled from Emilie’s heart, sang beautifully. The day looked promising.
“Mom, I know you’re going to work in the morning, but I just wanted to let you know that I’d be going on that walk tomorrow.” Emilie had told her mom the night before.
“Emilie, I am starting to think that this wasn’t such a great idea.” Her mom had replied “think about it, it’s not safe. I don’t know if you should. I mean, Caleb will be in school and he won’t even know if something happens.” She’d continued.
“Mom, seriously, you worry too much. I need to do things on my own”
“But Emilie, I am worried. You’ve never done it before. It’s really not safe out there.”
“You say that everyday mom, but just once, just that one time, would you let me do this. I promise, I will never ask you for anything else. You have to believe that I can do it, besides you’ve already said yes.”
“Fine, I did say yes” her mom said with a sigh “I will have Caleb write you something so you can take with you; you’re probably going to need it to get back.”
“Thanks mom” she turned to leave but just before she got in her room she turned and say “mom, I promise I won’t mess this up”
“I know, I’m just worried about you”
“Someday, you’re going to have to stop protecting me.”
“I know that, but that day is not here yet.”
So she woke up bright and early, took a shower and was dressed before any of them were. Caleb had written the address for her the night before, on an index card which she now placed in the back pocket of her jeans. She searched with her hands for her cane and sunglasses. A few minutes later she was ready, she walked out of her room into the living room.
Her mom had already made breakfast –eggs and cheese with toast- which she happily munched on. After downing her orange juice, she hopped out of her chair and cocked her head to the side listening intently for something. A few moments later she walked in the general direction of where her mother was seating, and stopped a few feet away from her.
“Mom?”
“Yes” her mom replied stretching out her hands and grabbing Emilie’s “what’s wrong”
“Oh nothing” she said travelling her hands up her mom’s arms to her shoulders. She rested her palms on her mother’s soft and now wrinkly face. She took her time studying her face, before bringing her cheeks closer to her mom’s. She placed a kiss on the soft skin “thank you mom, I know it’s hard to let me do this, but thank you.”
“Please be careful” was all she said.
After everyone was ready to head out, Emilie thought that the best thing would be to walk with Caleb to his school. It was a straight road according to Caleb, so that wouldn’t be so hard. After lots of arguing, and a few “why do you have to go so far” from her thirteen year old brother who suddenly thought he was a man because his voice had started changing, they were off.
